Charles Whitlock Obituary

WHITLOCK, Charles Earl, 66, departed this life for heaven on Sunday, January 29, 2023, after a brief illness. He is survived by his beloved dog, Max; his high school sweetheart and devoted wife of nearly 46 years, Peggy; his children, Kelly (Dave) Caddell and Jason (Grace) Whitlock; and the joy of his life, his four grandchildren, Chase, Bryce, Taylor and Emmy, who knew him as PaPa. He is also survived by his mother, Dorothy Whitlock; and siblings, Vickie and Marty (Lisa) Whitlock.

Charles loved all things sports - whether it was playing, coaching, or watching. He got his start at Mechanicsville Little League, played multiple sports at Lee-Davis High School, then continued his baseball journey at VCU. After college, he spent his career as a teacher, coach and mentor at The New Community School. His students fondly remember him as Coach Whitlock and his impact there will carry on through the lives he touched for years to come.

Charles was a lifelong member of Grace Christian Church. His favorite ways to spend his time always included being with his family. He enjoyed going out to eat, vacations to the beach, watching his grandkids play sports and then always taking them out for ice cream afterwards. He leaves behind a legacy of lives touched through his caring spirit, sense of humor and always well-timed words of wisdom. Until we see you again PaPa, you will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at 11 a.m. at the Mechanicsville Baptist Church, 8016 Atlee Road, Mechanicsville, Va., followed by luncheon visitation. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Grace Christian School Building Fund, Box 215, Mechanicsville, Va. 23111 or online at www.grace-school.net.

I have such great memories of Charles. When I first played ball at Mechanicsville LL, he was on my team (The Twins) and his dad (Earl) was my coach. As I progressed through Little League we also played on All Star teams together. Charles was a fine athlete but also he was just a good guy. I also remember him from West Hill Baptist as he and Peggy began their courtship. Charles was also a fine believer in Christ Jesus and I remember running into him at several men's conferences. He will definitely be missed and I look forward to seeing him in heaven one day soon.

Coach Whitlock was more than just a basketball coach to me, he was a mentor and leader in my life since my middle school days. His impact on my life will never be forgotten. He has been there for me since my freshman year on varsity basketball, always taking the time to get to know me and offer guidance when I needed it most. Despite his busy schedule, he had an acute awareness for when things weren't going well for me and always took the time to listen and offer wise advice. When I found myself in difficult situations, Coach Whitlock's calming presence always helped me see things in a different light and navigate the challenges with ease.

The news of his passing has left me with a deep sadness, as I know I will never again hear his infectious laughter or feel his comforting presence. He was more than just a coach, he was a great role model and friend who helped shape me into the person I am today. I am truly grateful for the time I was able to spend with him and the memories we shared. His legacy will live on through all of us who were lucky enough to know him. Rest in peace, Coach Whitlock. You will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Love you coach

Coach Whitlock was a wonderful coach, friend, and mentor to our son and a true blessing to our family. As a coach, it was inspiring to see how he could bring a group of teenage boys together, of all skill levels, and get them to work together as a cohesive team. He instilled confidence in the boys and a safe space for them to learn and develop lifelong skills of teamwork and comradery. He was a true coach instructing them on the fundamentals of the game and team strategy and a trusted mentor and guide who prepared them for the "game of life". Off the field, he took the time to be a friend and confidant. He had an impact on our family and we are grateful that he came into our lives. We are sad to hear of his passing and will keep him and his family in our thoughts and prayers.
Fondly, The Cramer/Dietzler Family

Peggy and Family, My sympathy for all of you. When Charles and I both at the church, we were always joking around. He made me laugh a lot. I will never forget when I was leaving Mechanicsville for VB, how he portrayed me in a skit. I know your memories are so many and you will have a lot of memories to remember him. My heart and prayers go out to y´all. JoAnn.
