Shirley Stein Obituary

Mrs. Shirley E. Stein

Mrs. Shirley E. Stein, 92, of Lehighton, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 19, 2023, in the St. Luke's Hospital, Carbon Campus, Franklin Township, surrounded by her loving family. She was the widow of William D. Stein Jr., who passed away in 1992.

She had previously been employed at numerous Lehighton clerical offices, including the Barson & Bishop Factory and Dr. John DeMatte Chiropractic office.

Born in Lehighton on Feb. 4, 1931, she was a daughter of the late Nellie (Fritzinger) Ahner.

She graduated from Lehighton High School in 1948.

Shirley was a previous member of St. John's Church, Mahoning Valley, where she was a member of the choir and served as treasurer along with her husband.

Currently, she was a member of Zion UCC, Lehighton, where she formerly served on the altar guild.

Shirley volunteered at the Mahoning Valley Nursing Home and was a member of The Knitters at Trinity Church, Lehighton. Since 2003, she played in the Senior Games, winning many medals in swimming and other events (i.e. miniature golf, bean bags, bocce, horseshoes, etc.).

She had many activities that she loved: bus trips, playing cards with girlfriends, board games, going to movies, bowling and canvas weaving. She also played mind games on the computer, read, played piano and sketching. She was notorious for her free-hand drawings.

Surviving are three children, LaRae Hlavaty (widow of Ronald) of Lehighton, Craig Stein, and his wife, Lisa, (and stepdaughters Kaitlyn and Madison) of Bethlehem, and Crystal, wife of Mark Reid of North Andover, MA; four grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom she adored, Tara, wife of Dr. Christopher Haas of Houston, TX, Nicole, wife of Conor Sedam of Novi, MI, and Auriel George and Chandler George, both of Lehighton; and four great-grandchildren, Avery and Nellie Haas of Houston and Ronin and Raika Sedam of Novi.

Service: Memorial service 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, April 1, Mayes-Melber Funeral Home, 200 Franklin St., Weissport, with the service to be conducted by Pastor Dean Frey. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her name may be made to the Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma Society.

How can 3 years have gone by without you ?
The "game day ladies" think of you every time we get together.
When Raika sees a rainbow, she says "Hi GG " !
You will be missed forever and will remain in our hearts until we meet again.

It was a beautiful day yesterday when I put new, spring flowers on your grave. Our family was so fortunate to have you in our lives for as long as we did.
I will love and miss my "Dynamic Duo Partner" every day.

Mom - can't believe it's two years you left us. It seems like yesterday we were playing Rummikub with you and having lots of laughs.
You are missed so much by our family, but we know you are in a better place. We were so blessed to have such wonderful parents.
You are forever in our hearts. We love you and we'll be together again someday!

Happy Birthday in Heaven mom.
I miss you each and every day.
The ladies will be playing games again next week and we always have a toast for you and share funny stories.
I hope when you look down on us, you are proud of your family; you and dad were the BEST.

Mom, another Christmas is coming without you. But you are always here in our hearts and in everything we do. There's a beautiful Christmas tree in the park, placed in loving memory of you by Chandler and Tiffany ! The ladies played games yesterday, and we toasted you and shared funny stories ! Every time Raika and Ronin see a rainbow, they say " Hi GG "! And it goes on and on. You will be with us until we meet again in Heaven.. We love and miss you every day.

I know it has been over a year since Shirley has passed, but I just wanted to take a minute to say that Shirley, I did it! I am finished with college as I graduated back in May with my associates in communication! I recently received my diploma. I know you´re watching up there with a huge smile on your face, and I know you cheered when I was at graduation! You were one of the many people I knew who always believed that I could do it, so I did! I know you´re very proud and your support I´ll cherish! As time went on you often asked how much longer I had yet with my schooling and you always said good luck! And yes, I´m still working hard! Miss you and love you!!

Mom,
I think of you every day and miss you so much.
A beautiful poem was in the paper for your first anniversary in Heaven.
Your cactus plant that you said never bloomed continues to produce beautiful orange flowers; I know that's a sign from you !!
We were the "Dynamic Duo" and always will be.
Love forever... LaRae

Being a worker at the Palmerton for almost two years now, it was a real great pleasure to get to know Shirley. She was always a sweet, kind, and complimentary woman. She would always tell me "don´t work to hard" after dinner was over, always would ask me how I was doing, always would ask me how my school was going etc. My deepest condolences to her entire family during this difficult time. Rest easy and God Bless!
