I recently learned of Alan´s passing and would like to extend my deepest sympathy to Lacey and all of Alan´s family. I came to know Alan as a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Cancer Biology at the University of Toledo College of Medicine, following his tenure as Provost at the University. Despite his enormous accomplishments as a researcher, educator and academic administrator, Alan was always a humble and gracious colleague, with a keen sense of humor and a willingness to share his accumulated wisdom and knowledge. I look back in fondness on the years we spent together in the department, and I know that Alan left a deep mark on the research community and the many students and faculty members he interacted with during his remarkable life.

Lacey,
Carole and I send you our love, sympathy and support. We enjoyed our time together with Alan at Chaine, his love of wine and birds. A great loss of a gracious man.

I am writing to express my sadness upon hearing of Alan´s loss. Alan had an important impact on my life, as he was the Department Head who hired me as an Assistant Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Iowa. Alan was a terrific departmental leader. He was very supportive of his junior faculty, promoting them and always celebrating their successes. In the early days, he read every grant proposal I wrote. His edits were powerful, and I think that I really learned to write because of his efforts. I feel lucky to known him and to have had him as my boss.

To Gardner and Bryant from over the fence, and forty plus years ago: We were very saddened to learn of your dear Dads passing. Strangely we were at the cottage and my Dad Paul (86)out of the blue, asked me if I knew how your Dad was That was August 15th and I found the obituary. We lost our Mom in 2018. Your Dad was such a a fine and thoughtful man - and no one was lovelier than Ann! We have so many fond memories of your family, of being kids on the block till the lights came on, hose fights and playing with the baby chicks your Dad brought home, swimming and doing math competitions poolside, sharing french food and wine after your Paris adventures, and then visiting Shaker Heights! Small world: Suzi lives in France, married a frenchman and has 3 grown children: a chef (Roxanne,27) a marine engineer (Michael,24) and a university student ( Candice, 21) Erinne and her husband lived in Cleveland for 4 years, now in Wellesley Mass, four kids Rasmus studying computer science 21, Julie 19, at Smith in engineering, Karoline 17 and Thor 11. Tony and I still in Toronto: have 3: Matthew 33(lawyer) Samantha 31( married and AGM of Eataly restaurants, Peter 27 works for MlSE. I hope both your families are healthy and happy.
