STACK Charles Joseph 1929-2007 Dr. Charles Joseph Stack, DDS, age 77, died peacefully on January 13, 2007, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. (Although suspicious, his death is not related to Ohio State's devastating loss to Florida in the national championship game on January 8.) Dr. Stack, an avid Buckeye fan, was known to friends as Chuck or Charlie, and lived a full life, most of it in Toledo, as a practicing children's dentist and orthodontist. He was a loving father, husband, and grandfather, as well as an avid outdoorsman. Known by all for his great sense of humor, story-telling skills, and particular ability to relate to children, he will be long remembered and deeply missed. He is survived by his second wife, Rebecca Stack; his three daughters, Bridget Stack of Chicago, IL, Jennifer Stack-O'Connor (John) of Gardiner, NY and Christine Parker (Michael) of Cincinnati, OH and his four grandchildren, Erin, Kelsie, Sarah and Benjamin Parker. His first wife of forty years, Marcella Alten Stack, and the mother of his children, passed away in 1994. One of six children of Robert and Marguerite (Yingling) Stack of Lorain, Ohio, Dr. Stack was born March 27, 1929. He is survived by one sibling, his eldest brother, Robert Stack Sr. Preceding him in death were his brothers, David, Edward and Joseph Stack and his sister, Martha Ann (Stack) Corker. Dr. Stack grew up in a house on Lake Erie where his love of the Great Lakes and water sports was born. He earned his undergraduate degree from John Carroll University, Shaker Heights, Ohio and while there he joined the US Marine Corps. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant and completed officer's basic training at Quantico, VA. Ultimately, he achieved the rank of Captain serving in the Reserve. He was accepted into the Goodyear Aircraft executive training program in 1953. In 1954, he married Marcella Alten of Lorain, OH. Following a lifelong interest in medicine, in 1956, Dr. Stack enrolled in dental school at Ohio State University, Columbus. Following a year of post-graduate work in Rochester, NY, Dr. Stack set up a pediatric dentistry practice in Toledo in 1961. In 1972, Dr. Stack completed construction of his office building at 4165 Monroe Street where he ran his dental practice and leased office space to other dentists and businesses. By the time of his retirement in 2000, he had many former patients now returning to him with their own children. In addition to his practice, Dr. Stack volunteered as an emergency dentist on call at The Toledo Hospital and was a member of the Toledo Dental Society. An accomplished hunter and angler, Dr. Stack enjoyed frequent hunting and fishing trips throughout the US, Canada and South America. Every summer he could be found perch fishing on Lake Erie, and every fall he was hunting for ducks and deer. He was a lifetime member of Ducks Unlimited and a member of the National Rifle Association. Dr. Stack was also a skilled wood worker, building everything from furniture to miniature airplanes to the extensive deck on the family home. He was a natural gardener and enjoyed the landscaping and upkeep of his yard and gardens. Many of the evergreens, rhododendrons and azaleas he planted are still thriving after more than 30 years. Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 16 at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave, from 4-7 p.m. where funeral services will begin Wednesday at 9:30 followed by the funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Sylvania.
