William Mossing Obituary

Sept. 3, 1922-Aug. 19, 2005
William F. Mossing, 82, of Napoleon, Ohio, died Friday, August 19, 2005, at his home. Born September 3, 1922, in Assumption, Ohio, he was the son of Margaret Long Pilliod Mossing and William Wendell Mossing. On October 5, 1945, he married Laura Jane Stoner, who survives.
William graduated from Swanton High School and served in the US Navy submarine service during WW II on the USS Drum in the South Pacific. He held bachelors and masters degrees in education from Bowling Green State University.
His Napoleon High School career began in 1948. His thirty year career with the school included the following: American History and government teacher, coach of football and basketball, founder and coach of the Napoleon High School golf team, athletic director, and principal. During his tenure as principal, the new Napoleon High School was built.
William was an athlete and a life long sports fan. He was a member of the Bowling Green State University Golf Team and enjoyed golf for the remainder of his life. He held several Napoleon Golf Club championships. William was inducted into the Ohio State High School Athletic Director's Hall of Fame and the Napoleon High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He was a state high school football and basketball referee.
His favorite sports teams included Napoleon High School Wildcats, Ohio State Buckeyes, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Cleveland Indians and the Cleveland Browns.
William was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, Elk's Lodge #929, Napoleon, Bert G. Taylor Post#300 American Legion, Ohio Retired Teachers Association, Henry County Retired Teachers Association, and life time member of the Napoleon Athletic Boosters.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Laura; his children, Kathleen Mossing, Seattle, WA, Sue Reed (David), Holland, OH, Rick Mossing, Toledo, OH, Mary Mossing (Frank) Naples, FL, Steve Mossing (Peggy), Napoleon, OH and Mark Mossing (Kristi), Needham, MA; grandchildren, Peter and Molly Reed, Nicholas Mossing, Will Mossing, Ben, Chase and Jack Mossing; sisters, Joan Elton and Judy Yager (Leo).
The family will receive friends on Monday, August 22, 10:00 a.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 221 East Clinton Street, Napoleon, Ohio with a funeral mass following at 11:00 a.m. Interment will take place at St. Augustine Catholic Cemetery, by joint Veterans Post of Napoleon. Memorials may be made to the William F. Mossing Golf Scholarship Fund c/o The Henry County Bank, Napoleon, Ohio, St. Augustine Catholic Church or Hospice of Henry County. Arrangements are being handled by Walker Mortuary, Napoleon, Ohio.
