Resident of Pinole
Raymond Bernard Spellacy of Pinole, California, passed away surrounded by his family on June 15, 2013. Raymond (Ray) was born in San Francisco, California, to Gertrude and Raymond Spellacy on April 29, 1929. He attended St. Ignatius College Preparatory School in San Francisco and graduated in 1947. He began his college career at the University of California, Berkeley, and later attended the University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy in Laramie, Wyoming, where he graduated in 1952.
While attending school in Laramie a friend set him up on a blind date with Dorothy Rudisill, who worked in the administration department at the University. The two were married in San Francisco in 1951 and lived in Contra Costa County since 1956, moving to Pinole in 1963.
Together with Dorothy he opened Pinole Valley Pharmacy in 1960, and operated the store for nearly 30 years. For many years Ray and Dorothy owned a cabin at Pinecrest, where Ray spent many summers enjoying the Sierras, and where he and Dorothy developed a wide circle of friends.
After retirement from his Pharmacist career Ray began collecting figurines illustrating the Charles Dickens era of English history. He was active in Club 56, an East Bay association of like-minded collectors that gathers monthly to share their passion. He had great fun staging and showing his collection, which took over several rooms of his home.
Ray was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Spellacy, a sister, Mary Ann Jones, daughter Kathleen Spellacy, and his parents. He is survived by daughters Linda Scott (Bryan), Karen Kendall (Gary), Sharon Russell and son Larry Spellacy, grandchildren Justine Baldacci (Matthew), Christopher Scott (Alexandra), Kristina Jenson (Ryan) and Courtney Kendall, and one great-grandchild, Ethan Jensen.
Ray was active in St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the California Pharmacists Association, serving as President of the Contra Costa County Chapter in 1972.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at 11AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 837 Tennent Ave., in Pinole. A reception in Ray's honor will follow. In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, please make a donation to the Lymphoma Research Foundation of New York, New York.

I just heard yesterday from Gayle Zacharia of your father's passing. So sorry I was not able to get to the service today. He was a dear man I knew at the YMCA for some years. We discussed my beloved 49er's quite often. The last time I saw him was a couple of weeks ago at the Kaiser blood lab. Never lost his "sweetness" and smile. He will be missed.

To The Ray Spellacy Family,
I was really sad to read of your Dad's last day. Gosh, what
a wonderful man! We had the nicest convertsation & he
looked so great the last time I saw him! He certainly will be
missed (I was very shocked to just read of Al Bond too!).
I hope happy memories & spirited times with a 'whole lot
of love' will see you through this. Know, I would be there
tomorrow, if I wasn't in Wyo. I'm sure your Dad would
understand this & I will be thinking of him. Bye for now
Your Cousin,

As a co-worker with Raymond's son Larry, through that association I know that he was a wonderful father and a man of strong character and belief in Christ. A true professional in his career and example to the community. With great love, he was a gifted family father who held his family close through love and devotion to God and Jesus Christ. He cherished his wife. His memory lives on through his family. Jim Riley

I was so sad to hear about Ray's passing. I saw him about 7 months ago at my dad's service. Ray and Dorothy were my God Parents. Ray was not just my dad's cousin but one of his closest friends.
Ray and Dorothy are whooping it up in heaven with my parents. No more broken bodies to hold them back.

I'm so very sorry to read of Ray's passing. He had told me he was not well and though he beat this, somewhat, earlier.. this time he could not. Your Dad and I met years ago on-line doing genealogy. We formed a good friendship when it developed he was born just 8 days before my twin sister and I were born in the same hospital in San Francisco(St. Mary's). We had so much in common re genealogy "The City" and school and etc in SF that we never seemed to be at a loss for words. Though I never met Ray, I've been in touch with him since way back, when he and your Mom drove each year up to Colorado/Wyoming to visit her Mom, until your Mom got to sick to make that trip. Your Dad spoke so fondly about your Mom - It was a pleasure to know him, Knowing he is at rest now, should give you the strength to deal with your loss. With my Sincere sympathy, Ruth (Grady) Skewis
