Dear Patsy, I was most saddened to learn today that Alton had died: what a wonderful, witty, and fun gentleman! I have so many delightful recollections of our times together, starting during his Navy tour in Portsmouth. I can't remember any time when he wasn't upbeat and a joy to be around; just seeing him, made me happy and brought forth a smile.
When Fred Holland comes back to Charlottesville next week, we'd like to come by and pay you a visit.
My prayers are with you and your family.

Patsy, Betse, Monty and Ashby - how sad we were to first learn of Alton's illness and now his passing. He was a wonderful and proud man and I know what a void his loss means to each of you. I am lucky to have called him Uncle and all who knew him were fortunate to have done so. We wish we could be with you at this time, but in our physical absence, please know that our hearts and thoughts are with you. Take care of each other - love, Susan and Pete
