Dorothy Sherman Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Oct. 15, 2008.
SHERMAN, Dorothy Eugenia Hair, age 90, of Richmond, Va., died on August 1, 2008 at Westminster Canterbury. Though late in life Alzheimer's disease diminished her, she will be remembered as she lived in her many vibrant years. She filled her days with prayer and Bible study and sought to follow God in all decisions great or small. She offered her life to her family and her church with service as a Sunday School teacher to adults. She loved flowers and fresh mint, kittens and little children, and anything blue and white. She danced in the kitchen while she cooked, and she sang show tunes while she did the housework. Dorothy "Dot" was born on April 26, 1918, in Spartanburg, S.C., to James Walton and Mae Murphy Hair. She graduated from Spartanburg High School (1935), Winthrop College (1939) and Southwestern Seminary (1943). She worked as a high school teacher, youth pastor, secretary to the dean, and editor for Christian publications. Dorothy is survived by her husband of 55 years, Cecil Sherman; their daughter and son-in-law, Eugenia and Doug Brown, Madison, Wis.; grandson, Nathaniel, University of Maryland; sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Cantey Gordon, Ellijay, Ga.; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Ruth and Roger Hamm, Oklahoma City, Okla., and Bill and Veta Sherman, Nashville, Tenn.; two nieces, five nephews, and many cherished friends. Services will be held at River Road Church Baptist on Monday, October 20, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made toward the completion of the Cecil and Dorothy Sherman Lecture Hall at Baptist Theological Seminary-Richmond, 3400 Brook Road, Richmond, Va. 23227.
