It's been two years. Two years ago at this very moment we were fast asleep in our bed safe and sound. We'd gone to dinner since Betsy had a sleepover. We rode all over town with the top down and pointed out all our landmarks.
I sold the car this week. Betsy is starting high school. We got a dog. The cats are fine. Sugar misses you-she lays on her back waiting for her "tum-tum" scratch. You are still a part of the house and our lives. Everything does go on, though. Not ready to move on-I don't really care what anyone says about that. I didn't get to have any say in your dying, but I can be the boss of my own living.
I love you.
From left to right, Dan Driscoll, Debbie Breaud, and Greg on New Year's Day, 1997. It was so cold their water bottles froze solid!

I rode across Texas with Greg in 9 days on a tour in 1994 and rode many other miles with him. He was a very dedicated cyclist with tremendous perseverance, "tough as toenails" as the saying goes. I will always remember and appreciate his words of encouragement as I followed his lead in going to Paris-Brest, the penultimate randonee in the world. I am proud to have known Greg and his lovely wife Patti. Greg will be missed.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Dean, Cliff and Alison,
I’ve tried to put into words the sorrow I feel but I simply haven’t been able to express my thoughts in words. Greg was the best friend I ever had; we grew up together more as brothers than just friends. My parent’s house was directly across the street from Greg’s house. He was the first person to come over and greet me when we moved to Texas; I was only in the second grade. Greg was the best friend anyone could have ever had and I will miss him for the rest of my life. You were all a part of my extended family. You were the closest and most loving family I have ever known. My fondest memories of childhood will always be of the times that I spent with Greg and his loving family.
Greg’s older brother Cliff was the ‘wise one’ who we could always go to for solutions to our problems. Cliff had a garage band and Greg thought that his brother was the ‘coolest guy’ around. I think Mrs. Dean was the only mother who would put up with their loud music, so their band practiced in the front room of the Dean’s house. (It was the sixties, so of course their music was loud Rock and Roll!)
I have many memories of the times I spent with your family. Mr. Dean built us an elevated ‘Fort’ in the backyard where Greg and I had many adventures together on weekend sleepovers. Greg was always full of life and he was the funniest person that I ever knew. He had the kindest heart of anyone I ever met and he was a natural comedian who could make me laugh until my stomach hurt.
Speaking of stomachs hurting, I will always remember Mr. Dean taking us for ice cream to the Polar Bear Ice Cream Parlor. Mr. Dean was always nice that way.
Greg loved his sister Alison and took care of her as a big brother should. (He played many practical jokes on Alison, but that’s another story!)
Greg was also a natural athlete. My house was next door to Bill Jones’ house and we had many football games using our two front yards as the field. I could never run faster than Greg so I always wanted him on my team. Bill Jones would often give a “Play by Play” account of each of our plays. Bill was also a natural athlete but when we had enough kids together Bill would get up on his second story porch and do an amazing job of sounding like a professional sports announcer. (It’s funny how that worked out.)
Well, I said I had a hard time putting things into words to leave a message in the guestbook and after I started writing I am having a hard time stopping. Greg will be with me for the rest of my life in memories.
I guess it really is true that you never have any truer friends than your boyhood buddies. I will see you again, my Friend.
Vicki Pierce

Please know we're saddened by this news and your family is in our thoughts and prayers. I went to school with Greg from elementary through high school where I remember him being an amusing and nice guy. In addition, we were close friends of Alison's at UT where I was a DU, she was a little sister and my wife was one of her roommates. Although I hadn't seen Greg in many years, we had occasional updates from common DU friends who knew him at UTA. He was well-liked and will be missed.

I'll never forget Greg. I have riden bicycles with him in the Carrollton group for many years. The last time I rode with him was the Saturday July 14th Andy Brown Ride with the Carrollton Cycling Club. I remember Greg joking with me before the ride that my bicycle was dirtier than his. He was a real funny guy in a sort of quiet way. The ride we had was an exceptionally good one. Greg was real fast on his bike. It was amazing because he had an older heavier bike than most of us. That day 7 of us- Chuck, Kevin, Cal, David, Harmon, me, and Greg rode out in front of the rest of the group. Harmon had hung back but decided that the slower group was too slow and bridged the gap to ride with us. The ride was pretty fast, mostly in the 20 to 25 mph range when we weren't climbing hills. We pretty much all took turns pulling and kept the pace up. The ride was the usual 56 miles and we were all tired, especially Chuck when we were done. I am going to miss Greg on all our rides and will carry his memory with me when ever I ride.

To Greg's Family,
I am so sorry for your loss. My family, the Joneses, lived across the street from the Dean's on Crestview for so many years. The Dean's were a big part of my childhood and particularly Greg who was such good friends with my twin brother Bill and who was also like a brother to Bill and me. I remember Christmas mornings, Greg coming over after unwrapping presents and watching our family unwrap presents and Bill and Greg would play with their new toys...usually hot wheels. I have fond memories of all those baseball and football games in the front yard with Greg. I had no doubt that Greg would grow up to continue to be a wonderful son and brother, and also become a wonderful husband and dad. Please know that you are always in our thoughts and prayers.

Dean Family, I've spent many hours riding with Greg. Usually we started out in a big pack and it would end up w/ only 1 or 2 riders remaining. After 80 or so miles most people where done. Not Greg! He was such a nice guy. I used to give him hell about his taped-up sun glasses all the time. He loved to ride, he loved his family and he loved living. My heart goes out to you all. Stacy

To Greg's Family,
I was shocked to hear of this news and am so sorry for your loss. This morning I have been thinking about Greg and Bill playing in our front yard every day Greg lived across the street from us. It seems like only yesterday when they were both oiling all their Hot Wheels cars to make them go faster. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Patti and Betsy, you are in our prayers during this difficult time. Greg was quite a warrior who touched many lives around him. He will be missed, but loved by our Lord who holds each of us in his loving hands. Prayers and blessings to you.
