We mourn the loss of your congregants. As an occasional member of a Saturday morning minyan I know the diehard members keep it together, so that when I feel the urge I can attend. These are the stalwart synagogue members, who make sure that people are welcome to pray as needed. I know they will be sorely missed.

Shalom,
May God grant peace and healing of all of those who suffered in the wake of the senseless violence. May it be that even this catastrophe will produce greater love, peace and understanding.
Andrew Germain
December 27, 2018
Hello.
My name is Andrew Germain and I am a music teacher for the Stephen S. Wise Temple and School.
I was asked by Rabbi Shlomo Bistritsky of Chabad of North Ranch, CA to play guitar for a few songs at our memorial T'fila Service for all of you who are suffering in a way that only you can understand. I played from my heart with a young Rabbi who had the most beautiful voice. We sang Hine Ma Tovu Manayim, Ma Tovu and Oseh Shalom. While I was very honored to be asked by this Rabbi, whom I greatly respect - to play guitar in a Shul that never has instruments used for its services, I was truly in awe of the power that music had in that moment.
The Rabbi Shlomo's words of wisdom and pain, and anger externalized what we all were feeling, as well as put an extremely bright spotlight on three big ideas that did not occur to me.
1) (The murder's name I will not type or pronounce... and may his name be erased from history). He said something to the effect of, "All Jews should die". He did not say just Chasidis Jews, or just Reformed Jews, or just reconstructionist Jews - he said all Jews. No matter what our path as Jews is and how we choose to observe, we are one.
2) When something awful happens to us, our response as Jews is that we pray. This is what we do. In fact, our response to anything is to pray.
3) ...And that we should all, now more than ever, make a firm commitment to perform a mitzvah in honor of those who you lost. May their names always serve as a blessing. When even one Jew dies, we all feel it, because we are one.
The mitzvah I will be performing in your honor - is that I will be offering music classes and other musical experiences for the San Fernando Valley Community Mental Health Center, Inc. which is the largest non-profit mental health services provider in the San Fernando Valley. We are comprised of over 35 programs at 24 different clinic locations. We treat over 15,000 children, families, adults and seniors annually. I will be focused on serving and supporting 'children of trauma', as I am a child of trauma and so is my 8-year-old daughter. May this mitzvah serve as a blessing of healing and reconnection and strength for all of you.
I wrapped T'filin the morning before the Memorial Service and made a strong commitment after the service to be a proud Jew, wear a Kippah as much as possible, and raise my daughter to be a proud Jew.
As a side note, while playing guitar in support of the young Rabbi's soul wrenching singing, that was the time that I heard sobbing during the service. I think this may have been because music makes us all feel - especially something that we cannot possibly intellectualize.
May you all have the healing and support that you need in exactly the way and time that you need it.
We are all connected.
Please know we are and always will be ONE - and we support you, our Brothers and Sisters. I wish I lived closer so that I can play guitar and sing with each and every one of you in your homes.
Most Sincerely,
Glen, Penny, Jeremy & Wyatt Alpert

Dear Community, Sisters and Brothers,
We are greatly troubled over the terrible massacre that occurred last Shabbat, when all
of us over the world were engaged in prayers for peace. Our solidarity with you is
unquestionable. We grieve. We are heart broken, and we rally together to lend you the strength of our shared conviction, that we are one, sending our prayers, our love and commitment to help in any way to overcome the hatred that led to this crime.
I will contact you after your period of mourning to offer you my painting, TREE OF LIFE
for your synagogue, should you choose to accept it.
Yours,
Joseph MacKenzie

Growing up in Squirrel Hill was like being a member of a large extended family. While I haven't lived in Pittsburgh for over 50 years, it still feels like home when I am there for family events. I was shocked and saddened this morning when I heard the horrible news about what was happening at the Tree of Life. My thoughts and prayers are with you as we all try to make sense of the climate of hate and discrimination that is rampant in the world today. These people will have not died in vain!!!! The Jewish community in Pittsburgh (and the world) will survive and come back stronger than before as a result of this tragedy.
With my deepest sympathies

Please send my personal condolences to the people in Pittsburg whose lives have been shattered by this cruel act of hatred.
This great human tragedy affects us all, whether we're members of the Tree of Life Synagogue, the Pittsburg Jewish community, or simply members of the human race who value life and the right to live one's life peacefully, without reproach for one's beliefs.
Today however, we are in mourning for the victims and their families of this tragic and senseless rampage.
I send my prayers to all those people.

We are deeply saddened by the recent tragedy of the senseless shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue. The malevolent forces in the world seem to grow stronger day by day, striving to extinguish the light of God from our lives and in our communities. Though these difficulties test our faith yet it develops a stronger devotion and determination that we let the power of God's love shine in our personal lives and in the spirit of our communities.
We extend to you our deepest sympathies and prayers for those souls who lost their lives and the incalculable difficulties to the families and communities affected.
With warmest and sincerest love,

Our first child was born when I was a graduate student in Steve Fienberg's statistics department at CMU living a half mile from Tree of Life. So of course Joyce offered to lend us their crib, which they wouldn't be needing until the grandchildren arrived. I am heartbroken about what has happened in my home town, to my beloved community. It gives me a tiny bit of comfort to know that my daughter slept in the same crib as Joyce's children and grandchildren. May she rest in peace. May all who knew her carry her kindness forward in their lives. May we all work together to counter hate with love. L'shalom.
