H. Graham Nye

Hugh Graham Nye was born on September 2, 1937 in Wakefield, RI to Kenneth and Dawn (Pipes) Nye. An only child, he attended Wakefield Elementary School and South Kingstown High School graduating in 1956. He is survived by his wife Jacqui (Bilodeau) Nye, daughters Rebecca and Katharine Nye, grandson Miguel Nye, and step-children Vivian and Colin Sutherland.

Graham graduated with a BA from Middlebury College and a MEd from Boston University. He also studied school administration at Vanderbilt University. After teaching history and serving as a guidance counselor, he became Principal of Hardwick Academy (Vermont) and a Junior High Principal in Derry, NH. The next position was what he considered his best accomplishment as he planned and developed a new 7-12 program for Green Mountain Union HS in Chester, VT. In 1974 the family moved to Calais, Maine, where he served as Superintendent of Schools. Following that assignment he served for 20 years as a Maine Superintendent. His last position was for nine years in Augusta. Retiring in 1999 he worked in an interim capacity in several Maine districts.

In 2004 He married Jacqui and moved back to Rhode Island. Since returning to RI he had been very active at First Unitarian Church of Providence as a member of the Prudential Committee and for five years as Treasurer. The return to Rhode Island allowed him to reconnect with the Pettaquamscutt Historical Society (now South County History Center) of which he was a charter member in 1958. He served as President and then as Treasurer.

Over the years his interest in history and libraries (his mother was a librarian at Peace Dale) caused him to serve on the boards of libraries in Calais and Augusta and several historical societies. Sports were always a part of his life from being on two Championship teams at South Kingstown to an avid love of Boston sports. He was a former member of the Society of Baseball Research and an attendee of the Baseball Hall of Fame Symposiums.

Burial will be at 11:00am on Wednesday, October 8th in New Fernwood Cemetery, Kingston, RI. A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, November 15th in First Unitarian Church of Providence, 1 Benevolent St, Providence, RI.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be given to First Unitarian Church of Providence or to the South County History Center.
