Einar L. Johnson

Einar L. Johnson, 82, passed away on July 6, 2024, at home, after a long and courageous battle. He always said he wanted to live forever, and in our hearts, he will.
Einar was born January 8, 1942, in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of Einar and Lyndall Johnson. He grew up in Baltimore and on the Chesapeake Bay. At the age of eighteen, he elected to serve our country by joining the Coast Guard, and was stationed in Alaska and the Chesapeake Bay. He continued his public service with a long career with the City of Baltimore Department of Transit and Traffic, where he was honored for his dedication and commitment to the safety of the city's citizens.
Einar is survived by his husband and long-term partner, Christian Blom, a 45-year bond that never lost its magic, as well as by his chosen family. You know who you are.
In 1998, Einar and Chris moved to Cumberland, charmed by the quality of life, the natural beauty, and the warmth of the people. Einar quickly made friends, became involved in the community, and sure enough, Cumberland soon became home.
Einar embraced life. He loved music, of all kinds, and for more than 60 years he would happily spend hours as DJ of his pirate radio station, WIPA, where he was the master of the segue. He loved toy trains, amassing a beloved collection of model engines, passenger cars and rolling stock. He loved real trains, and would gladly devote an entire day, in all kinds of weather, to waiting in some carefully chosen spot for the perfect photograph. He loved people, and never missed an opportunity to lend a helping hand. Einar was a good man, kind and generous. But of all his qualities, perhaps his brother-in-law says it best. "At the top of the list would be his infectious happiness. The world needs that innate joy."
Rest in peace, my dear, dear friend. No one deserves it more.
At the family's request, there will be no services. A Celebration of Life will be announced at a future date. For those who wish to honor Einar's memory, nothing would be more fitting than extending kindness and generosity to those less fortunate.
