I was young & newly married when I was blessed to have her as my piano instructor at WMU. Her matter of fact leading inspired me to be attentive in my own teaching to my students. I still hear her corrections and see her arm directing beside me. My condolences to the family. Be assured she lives on in many of her students.

Requiescat in pace, Phyllis. You were a great performer and an outstanding teacher. Every time I sit at the piano, I recall something from the five years that I was privileged to be your student.

For me, Phyllis was the "GODMOTHER" of my family.
She gave us all love and care, and her value is preserved in our hearts.
Phyllis, we'll celebrate your birthday every year, as you use to do for us every year.
We love you.

No words, except thank you dear Phyllis for the many ways that you welcomed us into your life.Every time Holly's hands touch the piano I will be reminded that you are still with us. May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord makes his face to shine upon you and give you peace.

I'm sure my mother (Helen Jo Emerson, passed away 30 Sept 2017) is also thinking of Phyllis and meeting up with her in some world out there. She and Phyllis, and my father too, have been friends since 1977 when I first started studying piano with Phyllis. She enriched my parents' lives and perspectives tremendously concerning the performing arts.

I had lunch with dear Phyllis on Tuesday morning the 7thshe drove herself to Sarkozy's Bakery and my husband and I had a wonderful lunch with her...so hard to believe that she was gone only 48 hours later.
Phyllis was one of the biggest influences in my life. I studied piano with her during 10th-11th-and 12th grade, when she only had two non university students, myself and a very talented child prodigy from Tokyo who had also kept in touch with Phyllis all these years (I wonder if she has heard...). Phyllis advised me to go to Cornell to study with Malcolm Bilson, and then advised my masters degree study program as wellsuggesting I go to Queens College in NYC. But years later when my life turned to far-away Java, and the arts of Javanese gamelan and Javanese wayang, she was right in there supporting me all the same. She spearheaded a Javanese gamelan and wayang performance at Dalton in June 2006, she was so supportive.
Although I've lived in Indonesia since 1991, I have managed to have lunch with Phyllis 4 times per year when I'm back and it has always been such an inspiring and memory-packed two hours with her. The last of which was just last Tuesday. My Javanese husband, a professional musician who speaks little English, came along and Phyllis was always so embracing of him and they somehow communicated anyway.
I have a big whole in my heart without Phyllis, but am so blessed to have known her.

Sincere condolences to the family - Phyllis touched many (among whom are 2 of my children) with her collaborative skills, she was generous with encouragement and enthusiastic with her support of artistic talent even after students moved on from working with her.

I am very sad that we have lost Phyllis. She made many contributions to the arts in Kalamazoo. I am honored to have been her friend.
