Dr. Warren Lee Bendel of Kingwood Texas passed away on May 8, 2015. He was born in Ravenna, Ohio on January 19, 1925, to Fred and Lillian Bendel. He graduated from Kent State University and earned his Ph. D. in Physics at the University of Illinois.
Dr. Bendel was a nuclear physicist at the US Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, from 1953 to 1984 and author of over 40 refereed scientific papers, mostly in the Physical Review. He received the "NRL Research Publication Award" in 1977 and 1978. Most of his work was on the nuclear reactions and radioactivity produced by high energy electrons. He also designed a magnetic spectrometer at Illinois and several magnetic systems at NRL. His later work was largely mathematical, calculating radiation damage to spacecraft electronics.
Warren served on the councils of three Lutheran churches and was on the board of Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area for 7 years.
He and Adele Slama were married on April 7, 1956 at Luther Place Memorial Church in Washington DC.They loved to play bridge and to travel, visiting many national parks (including Yosemite five times), and taking cruises to England, Alaska and through the Panama Canal.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Adele, Daughter Kathy and her husband Terry Ciliske of Kingwood Texas and three grandsons: Captain Charles and wife Colleen of Houston, Texas, Daniel of Carlsbad California, and Steven of Houston, Texas.
