Flo Price Obituary

Flo Whittington Bigby Price

BOSSIER CITY, LA - Services celebrating the life of Flo Whittington Bigby Price, 86, will be held at First United Methodist Church of Bossier City at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 4, 2009. Officiating will be Rev. David Dietzel. Interment will follow in Hill Crest Memorial Cemetery, Haughton, LA. Visitation will be Monday, August 3, 2009 from 5-7 p.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Bossier City, LA.

Flo, a descendant of a pioneer family of Bossier Parish, was the daughter of the late Volney Voss and Anna Harris Whittington. She was born June 15, 1923 and was a resident of Benton, LA as a child and graduated from Benton High School. Flo attended Centenary College and LSU where she received her Bachelor's Degree in Home Economics.

Flo married the late State Representative and Judge, Walter O. Bigby in 1962 and served by his side professionally and socially until his death in 1980. After many years of being a businesswoman and single mother to her son Walter O. Bigby, Jr., Flo married Judge O.E. Price in 1997. They enjoyed nine years of marriage until his death in 2006.

Flo began her professional career with a brief stint with Delta Airlines and then spent two years as a high school teacher at Haughton High School. She then followed in her father's footsteps and became involved in businesses in Bossier City. Flo was a co-owner in Whittington & Myers Insurance Agency for 31 years and became instrumental in the early years of Bossier Bank and Trust serving on the Women's Advisory Council and the Bank of Benton serving on the Board of Directors. Flo began her real estate career by assisting in the development of Greenacres and Palmetto Subdivisions in Bossier Parish. Many commercial real estate projects were possible because of her involvement, including the Kroger grocery store and adjacent buildings on Benton Road in Bossier and Graybar Electric in Shreveport. Still active into her eighties with her personal business affairs Flo was a fixture around her office on Benton Road.

Flo was a charter member of the Bossier City Mother's Club II and a member of Delta Zeta Sorority as well as the Bossier City Quota Club, The Shreveport Regional Arts Council, The Shreveport Club, The Shreveport Symphony and Palmetto Country Club where she held long standing memberships. Flo also served as Director and Secretary of the Bossier City YMCA, as well as a Board member of the Shreveport Little Theater and Board of Directors of Goodwill Industries. Her charitable contributions were very important to her. Some of the main benefactors and organizations close to her heart were The Salvation Army, Providence House, American Cancer Society and the Methodist Children's Home, just to name a few.

Flo was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Bossier City. Later in life she became a member and was active in the First United Methodist Church of Bossier City.

In her later years, Flo very much enjoyed the fellowship and camaraderie of her Bridge Club and Book Club in Bossier City. Bridge was not her forte, but being with friends and part of the party was. Her sweet smile and compassionate personality will be missed by all.

Preceding Flo in death are her parents Volney Voss and Anna Harris Whittington, her sister Ann Whittington Graham, and her husbands Judge Walter O. Bigby and Judge O.E. Price.

Left to cherish her memory is one son Walter O. Bigby, Jr. and wife, Ginger of Bossier City; grandsons Hayden O. Bigby of Bossier City, Zach Hendrix of Haughton; one granddaughter Whitney Ponce of Houston, TX; and two nephews Voss W. Graham of Cordova, TN and James E. Graham, Jr. of Dallas, TX.

Honoring Flo as pallbearers will be family members.

The family wishes to thank the staff of the Grace Home for their loving support and care for Flo for the last two months; also a special thanks to Neecy Johnston, Glenda Johnson, great niece Camile Graham and John and Jeane Price for their loving support over the years.

Memorials may be made to the Flo Bigby Price Scholarship Fund, LSU Foundation, Lod Cook Alumni Center, 3838 W. Lakeshore Dr., Baton Rouge, LA 70808. Rose-Neath Funeral Home

Dear Walt & Family; You do not know me but I go way way back with connection to your mother and your grandfather. I loved Mr. Voss. My husband & I built the first small ( more of a Mom & Pop )motel in Bossier City, called Greenacres. Bossie Bank financed that plus many other investments. Flo reached 86 in June I will be 86 God willing in December so that explains the memories that flashed through my mind hearing of your loss. I also shared time with O.E. in the mid fifties before his first wife's demise. Our circle is growing ever so small. My prayers are with you and you have many wonderful memories to relive. God Bless
