David Hoffman Obituary

David L. Hoffman Jr. On April 6th, 2024, David L. Hoffman Jr. died of natural causes at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville, NY.
Dave was born on May 10, 1945 in New York City and was the first of four boys born to Dr. David and Mrs. Beverly Hoffman. He grew up in Rochester Minnesota, attending Calvary Episcopal Church, where he was an acolyte, Hawthorn and Edison elementary schools, Central Junior and John Marshall High School. He graduated from Vermont Academy, Saxton's River, Vermont, with the class of '64. He spent his college years at the University of Minnesota, Duluth where he earned a BA degree.
A Vietnam era veteran he volunteered for the draft in 1967. Dave was part of an infantry battalion nicknamed" The Old Guard", which bivouacked at Fort Myers, Virginia. His duties were primarily ceremonial infantry in and around Arlington Cemetery, and Army military functions in the Washington DC area.
In August of 1971 he married Deborah Franz of Dolgeville, NY. They lived most of there 50 plus years in Gloversville, NY, and summered at Canada Lake NY.
Dave spent his work life in the restaurant and truck stop industry primarily in Fultonville, NY. His career began with the Howard Johnson Company working in Rochester Minnesota, and Chicago, Illinois. He also worked at truck stop sites in Indiana, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Ontario, Canada. He worked with a lot of wonderful people that he missed during his retirement years. He always said that every day some thing new and exciting made his work challenging, memorable and most times fun. He retired in 2010.
His passion was his family, Canada Lake NY, and the Adirondack Mountains. He was an avid sports fan, cheering on any team from Minnesota, Michigan and Gloversville, NY. He played some form of organized hockey and skied most of his life. He was a great organizer of trips to the Adirondacks, Rockies, the seashore, or a baseball game in Boston.
He loved his kids, music, golden retrievers, taking pictures, woodworking, the winter season and eating. He and Deb traveled a little, and most times it was to see the kids.
Preceding him in death were his mom and dad, Beverly and David Hoffman MD. Surviving are his wife Deborah, three children, David (Veena) Hoffman III, PhD of Ann Arbor MI., and Jonathan Hoffman of Brooklyn, NY. Also surviving are brothers Peter (Mulli) Hoffman DVM, Rochester, MN., Michael (Kathryn) Hoffman, DVM, Queensbury, NY., Mark Hoffman, of Burlington, VT, as well as nieces and nephews.
Arrangements were handled by the Amico Funeral Home.
In keeping with Dave's wishes, he is to be cremated. A celebration of life will follow for close friends and family this summer at Canada Lake.

I am sure I saw David as a young child. We moved into a house on 10 1/2 St. in Rochester, near his parents. "His love of Golden Retrievers" makes me smile. I remember one ("Jenny"?) sitting for hours in the driver's seat of his dad's old Model T Ford Farm delivery truck, looking ready to head down the street. I still smile when I think of that. Thank you, Hoffmans.
