Barbara Karol Obituary

Karol Barbara Kay Karol, of Columbus, died unexpectedly March 12, 2015 at her home. She was born in Lima, Ohio to the late Jack and Betty (Tolford) Sanders on June 19, 1943. Barbara grew up in several small towns in northern Ohio where she eventually graduated from Salem High School before going on to attend Kent State University. While at Kent State she earned a Bachelor's Degree of Fine Arts and then graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Master's Degree of English. She then put her education to use as an English teacher at Gahanna Lincoln High School where she also spent many years as the Yearbook Advisor leading her students to achieve many accolades and awards for their work on the yearbook staff. Among Barbara's favorite things she included her beloved students, The Ohio State Buckeyes' football and basketball teams as well as those of the Cleveland Cavs, Browns and Indians. She was a reluctant lover of cats after losing her dog, and an avid fan of trivia and games in general. Barbara was a lifelong member of the Kent State Alumni. She is survived by her loving family; son, Mark (Kim) Karol of Salem, Ohio and daughter, Kelly (Jeff) Dehnert of Lenexa, Kansas and their families; as well as her brother, Jack Sanders of Texas. The family will hold a Celebration of Life later this summer for all to attend. The time and place are to be determined. Barb was one of the best teachers I had at Kent's J School. I've always felt lucky to have known her.

Very sorry for your loss. Barb was a great friend when she was at Kent State, when we played bridge almost every day. And I remember watching Browns games at her apartment on Sunday. Great wit and great sense of humor.

In her presence you were amidst the angels

In her presence you felt the laughter of children

In her presence you felt the comfort of the sand beneath your toes and the wind in your hair

In her presence you felt the embrace and the love of a mother who held you unconditionally

In her presence you felt the gentle trust of a newborn baby

In her presence you felt the genuine concerns of your needs

In her presence you knew you were her family and she was yours

In her presence was the unconditional love of a being who was there for you

In her presence there was a zest for life that could be compared to none

In her presence was a desire to reach for the stars and to learn more than anyone could ever imagine

In her presence there was no one but you

In her presence He is there.

Dearest Kelly & Mark,

Your mom was mom to so many of us. Thank you for so graciously sharing her. I can only imagine your loss but am so amazed and yet not surprised at how strong and graceful you are, Kelly. You are a force to be reckoned with. You've done your mom proud. I love you both and wish you peace during your time of healing. Know that I am here for you . As you said, "Anytime, Anywhere...." Love, Rhonda

Mark and Kelly,
I'm so sorry for you loss. I have very fond memories of your mother from her time working at Kent State's school of journalism. She was a fabulous teacher and very supportive of the students in the school. I still think of her often.

Dear Kelly and Mark,

Your mother and I were friends while you lived in Salem. Although we had lost touch with each other, I thought of her often. I am so sad to hear about her passing. She was a wonderful friend and mentor to me as she was to so many others. She was a special person. With great sympathy, Jeri Hillyer Francis.
