Edward Kosnik Obituary

Kosnik Jr., Dr. Edward James
May 19, 1945 - June 24, 2018
Dr. Edward James Kosnik Jr., passed away June 24, 2018 in Charleston, SC. Born at home in Baltimore, MD on May 19, 1945 to Edward and Frances Sczepucha Kosnik, Ed was proud to be 100% Polish. He grew up with five sisters who called him Buzzy. He was a graduate of Loyola College and University of Maryland Medical School. During a surgical internship at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, he met the love of his life, Sally. They were engaged ten days after meeting and married three months later in January 1970. After one year training in Neurology at NYU – Bellevue Medical Center, they moved to Columbus in 1971 for his residency in Neurological Surgery at OSU. At this time, he also served as a Captain in the Ohio National Guard. Specializing in Pediatric Neurosurgery, he devoted 34 years of his life to patients at Nationwide Children's Hospital performing over 12,000 surgeries. He held many leadership positions including Medical Staff President at Nationwide Children's Hospital. In 2008, he was named Ohio Neurosurgeon of the Year. He trained many neurosurgeons including several who also specialized in Pediatric Neurosurgery; his youngest daughter was the most meaningful. While accomplishing professional goals, he and Sally raised four daughters and have been blessed with eight grandchildren who call him Dziadzi, Polish for Grandfather. He instilled in his daughters the values of hard work, compassion, perseverance, and selflessness, while inspiring them to pursue careers related to health care. He was an avid fisherman and loved spending time in Charleston, SC on his boat, Special Lady named after Sally. His other interests included crabbing, collecting Corvettes, antiques, carousels, Lionel trains, wood working, furniture building and restoring boat motors. He was a true Polish problem solver, could fix anything and build any piece of furniture without blueprints or plans. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Sally Chard Kosnik; their daughters, Sally Jo Niki (Jeffrey) Shafer, Jennifer Kosnik, Ellen (Dave) Cordle, Dr. Libby (Rhett) Infinger; and his grandchildren, Caroline Sally, Kyle Jeffrey, and Jacob Cooper Shafer, Edward James Kosnik, Ella Kathryn and Graham Edward Cordle, Rhett Edward and Lillian Frances Infinger; extended family and countless friends. Calling hours are 2-6pm on Sunday, July 1 at the O.R. WOODYARD NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 2990 Bethel Rd. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, July 2, 11am at St. Brigid of Kildare Church, 7179 Avery Rd. Interment to follow at Union Cemetery. Yesterday

Remembering Dr Kosnik. My 4 yr old was playing on her bunk bed and fell on her head and broke her neck in 1977. My husband and I took her to emergency room were the emergency Dr only saw bruising and we went home. Dr Kosnik called me the following morning to tell us to bring our daughter back to to do more xrays. We returned and Dr K explained that he saw a break in her neck on the previous xrays and she needed surgery. If he had not seen the break my daughter would not be here today. She's 52 yrs, a mom of 3 and a grandma of 2. God bless

I'm pretty sure Dr Kosnik was in part responsible for me being here today. I don't remember him because when he saved my life I was only 22 months old but I'm very thankful for all his work in helping to save my life. At 22 months old I fell out of a hammock and a piece of plastic went through my temple and I suffered a subdural intracerebral hemorrhage and was diagnosed with traumatic brain injury. Literally half of my brain was damaged. I wasn't expected to make it through the surgery. It was an emergency craniotomy upon arrival at Children's hospital in Columbus, Ohio on July 24th, 1985. I graduated highschool passing all required tests and I drive and function independently. I have three kids, the youngest being almost 6 months and I'm 41 years old. If I would have been able to thank him personally I would have. It's his knowledge and work and God that saved me. I'm sure from where I came nobody who treated me then thought I would have gotten to where I am today. I'm sure I can speak for all who we're treated by him how thankful we all are that he was there. Sounds like he lived a great life. The world suffered a great loss as well as those that loved him it seems when God called him home.

Dr. Kosnik has come across my mind today. He diagnosed me with Hydrocephalus (1999) and saved my life with multiple surgeries under his care throughout my life. He was the smartest and most talented man I ever met. May he rest in peace, and his legacy; never forgotten.

Wow. Dr. Kosnik came across my mind. He diagnosed me with a benign neuro tumor at age 4 when I had my first surgery (1988). My second surgery was at age 9 (1992). I will NEVER forget him. Now, at age 40, I can't believe I still remember the way he spoke, smiled and reassured my family that I would be do great in life. It's awesome to hear his daughter has followed his steps. Bless his whole family. Forever a memory. Never forgotten. <3 :)

Dr Kosnik diagnosed me with the brain tumor when I was 14 years old in 2001... Dr k always took great care of me. He actually gave me a hug after one of my appointments in his office and told me to hang in there... Hands down the best doctor I have ever had! From the second I met him I knew he was somebody I could trust... God bless Dr k!

I had the privilege of working with Ed at NationWide Children´s Hospital and the Medical University of South Carolina, where I served on the Administrative staffs at both hospitals. We were blessed to have Libby train and join our Pediatric Neurosurgery Department at MUSC Children´s Hospital and it was impressive to me to see Libby and Ed work side-by-side in our Pediatric Neurosurgery Clinic. He was passing on his knowledge and experience to Libby, "paying it forward" in the twilight of his career. This was a "gift" to Libby and to the MUSC Children´s Hospital. Well-done Ed!!!

Almost 19 years ago our son Allen was in a tragic hunting accident, he was accidentally shot in the head by his best friend. I´ll never forget the details of that day. Our 14 son was life flighted to Children´s hospital, we were fortunate enough to have Dr.Kosnik on duty that day as his neurologist. I give credit to God , Dr. Kosnik and his team that day for saving our son´s life. Dr. Kosnik never sugar coated anything and told us our son only had a 10-15% chance to survive. One thing he said was he did his part , the rest is in God´s hands and to take things one day at a time. Our son walked out of Children´s hospital two 1/2 months later. I´ll never forget Dr. Kosnik & the staff who cared for our son. Allen is a true TBI survivor & we were blessed to have Dr.Kosnick as his neurologist.

Deepest condolences to all of you. Dr. Kosnik not only saved our son's life he preserved the quality of it. Our son had an enormous arachnoid cyst which pushed the left side of his brain into the right side of his cranium. A year after the surgery he became the top student in his school. 15 years out he is now a highly successful economist in Washington DC. We are all forever grateful for Dr Kosniks skill and great compassion during an exceptionally dark time in our lives. He will remain forever in our prayers. As an aside, we met him in the elevator when checking in for the surgery. We also happened to be Catholic and he showed our son his medals, saying he'd be praying for him.

On behalf of my Grandview Heights family, I want to extend our condolences to the entire Kosnik family. I had the privilege of working with Ed at NationWide Children's Hospital for several years and also at the Medical University of South Carolina Medical Center, where he and I worked toward the end of our respective careers. The highlight of the latter experience was to observe Ed and Dr. Libby Kosnik Infinger have the opportunity to practice patient care together, both enhancing the quality of medical care for pediatric neurosurgery patients at our MUSC Children's Hospital. Ed was, first and foremost, a patient advocate but also was a wonderful physician leader, who worked collaboratively with those of us who worked in the administrative ranks. He was a valued colleague, mentor and friend. Dave Neff

Dr Kosnik was one of the most EXTRAORDINARY human beings I had the utmost honor, privilege and blessing of knowing!!! He gave my son his first haircut at 6 months of age. I remember the nurse handing me a small bag that contained several locks of my son's hair saying Dr Kosnik thought you would want this - all I could do was cry at the heartfelt gesture. Behind his "rough" exterior was a GENTLE giant of a man with a HUGE heart. He was an EXTREMELY GIFTED neurosurgeon. What a PROFOUND BEAUTIFUL legacy he has left to all those who knew/loved him!!! May you rest in peace Dr Kosnik!!!
My thoughts and prayers are with his beautiful wife, daughters and their families. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for SHARING your WONDERFUL husband, father and grandfather with my family!!!

Our thoughts and prayers have been with you all week. We hope that the messages shared have brought comfort to lessen the grief of your sudden and unexpected loss. May these testaments of treasured memories shared carry you and continue to carry you through the two most difficult days in your lives...last Sunday morning and tomorrow. The obituary is so beautifully written and captures his life perfectly, a life well lived, a gifted and passionate man who shared his many talents over several decades, a devoted husband, a loving father, grandfather and friend to many. Our lasting memory of him was just a few weeks ago at jeff and niki's, sitting at the table with his daughters and his grandkids playing a game, (gathered in celebration of his oldest grand daughter Caroline Shafer's, high school graduation) . He was so full of joy and happiness to be surrounded by his entire family on such a wonderful occasion. This is his legacy, the lives he touched the lives that carry on because of him. May you find peace and comfort in knowing you have a new very special guardian angel watching over you. As you shared Niki, I have no doubt it was he who guided me back to safety last Sunday afternoon. With loving thoughts and warm embrace to all he has touched and those who miss him dearly.

To the loving Kosnik family that touched my heart and treated me instantly like family when I first moved to Grandview. Words cannot express how my heart aches for you at this time. Dr Kosnik sounds like an amazing doctor and person. Though I never met him he operated on my daughters best friend , Madeline, when she was 5 and they were in preschool together. The surgery saved Maddies life- 22 years ago- and I might add she hasn't skipped a beat. She will be married to the love ❤ of her life at the end of this month and is still best friends with my daughter, Becca-. Truly grateful God placed Dr Kosnik in Maddies life. He sounds like he was an amazing doctor and man. My heart and prayers are with his family .

When I started my career at NCH Dr. Kosnik terrified me but it wasn't long before I realized just how genuine of a person that he truly was. That is most certainly true. We first met Dr. Kosnik at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus,Oh. in 1989 and continued with him until my son was 18 years old. Rip Dr.Kosnik
Words can not express the gratitude I have for the countless times you saved my life from the day I was born and worked to keep me alive and healthy. Or even just what the world has lost or the devastation I felt finding out you left the state although I understood and was happy for you, and recently hearing I would never get the chance to ever thank you. You will forever be the one I compare all my neurosurgeons to and no one has ever or will ever be able to compare to the safety I felt knowing you were going to help me. I hope to be able to show my respects if I am able to figure out transportation and I also hope to meet your daughter one day who is following in your footsteps and tell her how eternally grateful I am for you.

In 1995, Dr. Kosnik removed our daughter's astrocytoma tumor. She turned 5 in the hospital following the surgery. Year after year we had follow-up scans and had the pleasure of meeting with Dr. Kosnik and the relief of his reassurance that she had no more chance of having another tumor than anyone else. On July 28, this year she will be married. We owe Dr. Kosnik so much that we could never repay. May his memory be for a blessing.

We are so saddened to hear of Dr. Kosnik's passing. Our hearts go out to his loving family. We were very fortunate to have Dr. Kosnik enter our lives when our son Ben was 10 and had a brain tumor. The morning of his surgery, they moved up the schedule-there was an ice storm-and Dr. Kosnik delayed the start until Steve could get to the hospital to see Ben. What a wonderful man. Over the years, countless hours and days in his office and the hospital, 4 brain surgeries, radiation and chemo, Dr. Kosnik saved Ben's life multiple times and gave us 17 more years with him. We know that Ben welcomed his favorite doc with a big bear hug in heaven. God bless.

My husband and I are very new friends of the Kosnik's.
I first met Sally, we immediately knew each other. Soon after, she and Ed invited us to dinner. I have no Doctors stories to share, but reading other stories of their journey with Dr. Kosnik doesn't surprise me. He was special.
We were treated not only to a delicious dinner but, the wonder of their home in Charleston.
Ed's skills with wood working was magical, his sly humor infectious.
Later they visited us in Florida, another nice memory.
We have been blessed by this friendship, and will forever remember this giant of a man.

Please accept my deepest condolences. I truly think of Dr. Kosnik as a gift from God to my family. On May 19, 2003, he removed an anaplastic astrocytoma from my 19 year old daughter's brain. It re-grew and he performed a second surgery on her in 2004. She underwent 33 radiation treatments and 2 years of monthly chemotherapy. She went for follow-up MRIs every 3 months for several years. We would sit impatiently in Dr. Kosnik's office after each one, waiting to hear him say, Scans look great. Now, 15 years later, she is married and raising a beautiful daughter she gave birth to in 2012. I give God praise for all He has provided, especially the best neurosurgeon ever. Dr. Kosnik was special and will never be forgotten.

Such a wonderful man! He was the first doctor who actually listening to my daughter and basically saved her life. We had to drive 9 hours from PA to see him and never minded because he was such a compassionate doctor. He restored our faith in the medical community. We were so lucky to have found this special doctor. So sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Kosnik's passing. Of all the physicians I've worked with over the last 43 years I don't know of one that had a greater impact on my life and career. I remember the many Saturday's we worked with the team in the Operating Room to improve productivity and performance. I also remember watching him so very carefully shave only the minimum about of hair from a young adolescent girl's head in the OR knowing full well the impact of having a large bald spot following surgery would have on her self esteem. His commitment to his patients and his family set the standard for all of us. He will be missed.

Our deepest condolences go out to the Kosnik family. After suffering for over a year from the symptoms brought on by his yet to be diagnosed Arnold-Chiari Malformation where other doctors had been dumbfounded, Dr. Kosnik diagnosed the condition and performed a successful surgery on our oldest son 20 years ago. Later he allowed our son to shadow him on a career day and referred to him as Dr. Jonathan - such incredible skill matched with the kindest spirit! Today our son is a successful software architecture director for a prominent financial services firm. Dr. Kosnik was certainly a blessing for our family.

My thoughts and prayers to the entire Kosnik family. I feel so honored to have worked with your husband/dad. It's astonishing to think about how many lives he saved/helped in his lifetime. He was an amazing surgeon and a wonderful person. Rest In Peace Dr. Kosnik. Warmly, Aimee Wilber and Family
