Craig Sherbrooke Obituary

March 12, 1934 - March 26, 2022
Craig was born in Boston, Massachusetts to Oscar and Virginia Sherbrooke. He graduated from Phillips Academy – Andover in 1952 and received his Bachelor of Science from MIT in 1956. He received a Master of Science degree from MIT in 1960, and a PhD in bio-statistics from UCLA in 1969. While at MIT, Craig was able to indulge his lifelong love of sailing and ice hockey as a member of the Institute's teams. He also was an avid skier and loved playing tennis and bridge.
Craig served as an officer in the United States Army from 1956-1958. He joined the RAND Corporation in 1962, working on Air Force logistics problems. From 1972 to 1980 he was a vice-president of Mathematica, Inc. and, in 1983, he formed Sherbrooke and Associates, a consulting company, specializing in logistics. He was a consultant for the Logistics Management Institute, where his work included computer modeling for Space Station Freedom, and an Adjunct Professor of Operations Research at George Washington University. His book "Optimal Inventory Modeling of Systems: Multi-Echelon Techniques" was published in 1992.
Craig was a past president and trustee of the Washington Operations Research Management Science Council and was a long time member of ORSA (Operations Research Society of America).
Craig is survived by his wife of 57 years, Rosalie, his sons Andrew (Alexis) and Evan (Erin), and grandchildren Joshua, Michael, Alexander, and Samantha.

It was great privilege to team up with Craig at the Logistics Management Institute. He was a ton of fun and always an encourager. He tricked me into writing by co-authoring papers.

But the best part was needling him about his Tri-saca-phobia (can't play third base). He was a reliable hitter on the LMI softball team, but countless grounders would go between his legs before he could lean down to get the ball.

Rest in peace you old jokester you.

I never knew Mr. Sherbrooke but I am grateful for all his research and contributions to Logistics and Operations Research. Reading this obituary sheds more light to me about his great accomplishments. May we have more people like him in the world.
