Cary Buxton Obituary

BEDFORD - Cary R. Buxton, 63, of Bedford, died on October 18, 2014, at Catholic Medical Center in Manchester after a year-long, courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Nashua June 8, 1951, he is the son of Harry and Rita Buxton. He was raised in Milford, Millis, Massachusetts, and Peterborough and had resided in Bedford for 18 years.

Cary attended Peterborough High School where he was a three-sport player and co-captain of his teams from junior year on. Cary was voted 1969 Class President, and was proud to tell everyone that every five years, his class held reunions, resulting in strong friendships in his 92 classmates. Late in his high school junior year, Cary had an offer to attend Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana. In 1973 he earned a BA degree in History/Political Science. His legacy at the university came as a co-founder of the Butler Soccer Club in 1971, which later became a Division 1 program at Butler University. He was initiated by Phi Delta Theta International Fraternity, which provided many positive and life-changing events in Cary's life.

Cary began his career as a Chapter Consultant for the International Fraternity headquartered at Miami of Ohio, Oxford, Ohio. Later he was training and coaching new consultants as he was promoted to Director of Chapter Services managing 145 Chapters. He later migrated to the South to try his hand at Real Estate in Buckhead, Georgia. He looked for a career where he could learn sales techniques, set goals and train others, and found Proctor & Gamble. He held various positions including Sales rep in Alabama, District rep in Atlanta, Georgia and Unit Manager in San Antonio, Texas. In 1993, Cary was selected Region Sales Manager to bring a new product to market with Eastman Kodak, in Dallas, Texas. He was asked to become the Sales Trainer in Atlanta for newly hired sales reps and later returned to New Hampshire in 1997 as Regional Sales Manager, North East. His final sales position, which he held for 12 years, was at Conway Office Solutions of Nashua. He was especially appreciative of Conway Office's offer to have him return to work on a full or part-time basis after his spine surgery in July, 2013.

Cary was a man of faith and called the Bedford Presbyterian Church his Church home.

Cary held numerous positions in the Bedford community – most recently, Board Member, Bedford Babe Ruth. Cary was constantly reminded of a comment from President Bush, who said, "If you have not served your Country in the military, there are other ways to help your Country … especially as a volunteer in your Community." That resonated with Cary and coaching youth soccer, basketball and baseball became his passion for 17 years. Most recently, Cary was proud to receive from Bedford High School Athletic Director the "Unsung Hero" award recognizing contributions to the high school as Booster Club member and Community youth Sports Coach. Cary was manager of the 2005 Little League State Champions that went to Bristol, Connecticut. While that team was two wins away from going to Williamsport, what was remarkable was not the winning, but for six years after, the same 12 kids provided community service to our Bedford, Challenger-Little League kids by offering a Baseball Clinic each spring, to teach the Challenger kids baseball fundamentals. Cary was so proud of those young men.

Importantly, Cary was a devoted husband to Marcia Buxton, his wife of 38 years, and a dedicated father to his son, Brice Buxton. Additional family members include his two brothers, Scott Buxton of Los Angeles, Calif., and Jon Buxton of Monmouth, Maine, and his wife, Elena Buxton, and niece Amelia Buxton; and a sister, Susan Buxton of Springvale, Maine. Cary was predeceased by his older brother, Alan Buxton, who is buried in the New Hampshore State Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen.

There are no visiting hours. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, October 25 at 11:00 a.m. in the Bedford Presbyterian Church, 4 Church Road, Bedford. Please omit flowers as memorial donations may be made to: Bedford Babe Ruth, Finish the Field, 57 Green Meadow, Bedford, NH 03110 or to Challenger Division, Attn: Steve Schwartz, Bedford Little League, Nashua Road, Bedford, NH 03110. A private family burial will be held after the service.

I never has the privilege of meeting Cary personally but heard great things about him; particularly during his tenure at Phi Delt HQ while I was an undergrad member of the same Phi Delt Chapter at Butler where he proceeded me. As part of House Corp of the same Fraternity Chapter now; I struck up a relationship with Cary these past 9 months helping prep for his Butler Soccer Jersey dedication for this year's Homecoming event. We were excited that Cary & his Wife; Marcia were planning to attend...and I was going to finally meet Cary; only to learn that his health turned for the worst and had to cancel last minute. I am so sorry for the Family's loss and our prayers are with you....In Phi Delt tradition.."In Coelo Quies Est" translated "In Heaven There is Rest"

Please accept my deepest condolences and profound prayers for your loss. Although I never had the pleasure to personally meet Cary many wonderful memories still circulate the office where Cary once worked in Oxford, OH. As a Phi you feel a sense of connection as I now serve as the Director of Chapter Services - the position Cary once had. In heaven there is rest.

Another Phi Delt here. I was a freshman when Cary was a senior. So we didn't spend a whole lot of time together. But I do remember how positive and upbeat he always was. Rest in peace, Cary.

Although I was two years' senior to Cary in the Phi Delta Theta fraternity chapter at Butler University, I got to know him quite well. I will forever recall his amicable personality, dedicated study ethic, competitive sports regimen, and, above all, positive goal-oriented mentality. It is no wonder he became very successful in his subsequent professional career. All of us loved sharing stories with Cary by phone or email. Cary was a true icon to the fraternity and living inspiration to those that knew him. Goodbye my friend and heartfelt condolences to Marcia, Brice, and the Buxton family.

I was so very sorry to hear the news of Cary's passing. My prayers and sympathy go out to all his family and friends. We went to high school together, and kept in touch through the computer with news of our class. Cary always took that extra step with everyone he knew, and I'm sure he has a special place in heaven now.

Dear Marcie and Brice,

We are so very sorry for your loss. Cary was a great man and coach. He made the game of baseball fun for his players. He always had a positive attitude. Cary was someone you could talk to no matter the situation. He was highly respected by parents, players, coaches and all who had the pleasure of meeting him. There is always someone you remember from your past who had a positive impact on your life. I know Cary is that person for many and definitely made an impact on my son's life. My family feels blessed to have known him and I know that my son loved being part of his team. Cary will never be forgotten. Baseball in Bedford will never be the same without Coach B. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this very difficult time. May he rest in peace.

Dear Marcia and Brice – please accept our most sincerest condolences and sympathies at this very sad time. I am very honored and fortunate to have worked for Cary as an assistant baseball coach over these past several seasons. I was able to learn a great deal from his approach to working with the kids (especially the older ones). He always kept his composure and never got too excited or too down and because of his calm and consistent demeanor, he commanded respect from everyone that he came into contact with. Both of my boys were very fond of Cary and they will remember their experience with him for a long time to come. Coach B. was one of the “good guys” and he will be missed. We will keep him and your family in our thoughts and prayers.

Cary and I were fraternity brothers & Butler soccer mates, he was in our wedding, and a loyal friend of over 40 years. When I visited Marcia & Cary in Bedford some years back, I was thrilled when we went to have breakfast in Peterborough, getting to see the old stomping grounds. He was referred to as "Ol' Fighta" by his Phi Delt brothers and, in the end, he was. In coelo quies est.
