Nancy Virginia Hite, born November 16, 1938, in Bedford Township, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of her family Tuesday, January 20, 2026 in Brewster, Massachusetts.
Nancy was the daughter of James J. Hite and Ethel May (Tew) Hite and the eldest of three children. She grew up on her family's 100-acre farm along Old Route 220 in Bedford, where her early years were filled with riding horses, tending gardens, and learning the value of hard work and independence.
She graduated from Bedford High School in 1957 and went on to attend Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, Massachusetts, graduating in 1960. After college, Nancy returned to Bedford and worked as a bank teller at First National Bank. During this time, she developed a love for adventure, including touring America on the back of a Harley Hog. She later worked at Ames Department Store, where she famously had to be evacuated by boat during a flood in the 1990s, and at Sheetz, working the overnight shift.
In 2001, Nancy moved to
Canton, Massachusetts, along with her beloved dog, Skeeter-Ann, a husky-shepherd mix, to be closer to her nieces and their growing families. While in Massachusetts, she worked for many years at Ocean State Job Lot and formed a close and cherished friendship with Joan Bertowice of Canton. Together, they shared countless fun-filled adventures traveling throughout New England.
In 2021, Nancy relocated to
Harwich, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod to be closer to her brother James Hite and his family. Living at Pine Oaks, she came to treasure the many friends and family members who stopped by to visit, always eager to listen to her vivid stories of farm life in rural Pennsylvania and her many adventures over the years.
Nancy was predeceased by her brother Garland Hite (2016) and his wife Yolande (2018), as well as her niece Line Caya (2020).
She is survived by her brother James Hite and his husband John "Jack" Julio of
Harwich, Massachusetts; her nephew Luc Caya and his wife Anne-Marie Martin of Laval, Québec; her nieces Michelle (Hite) Alexander and her husband Fred of Brewster, Massachusetts, and Melissa (Hite) Witkus and her husband David of Douglas, Massachusetts. Nancy was a devoted and doting great-aunt to her grand-nephews Davin James Alexander of Plymouth, Colman Lars Alexander of Brewster, and Jackson James Witkus of Douglas, and her grand-niece Cora Faith Witkus of Douglas, all of whom brought her immense joy.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral service at Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home, 455 Washington Street, Canton, on Tuesday, January 27th at 12:00 p.m. Visiting hours will be held prior to the service from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by burial at Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton.
