Dr. Vincent J. Capraro

Red Bank - Dr. Vincent J. Capraro, 82, of Red Bank, NJ, passed away on May 28, 2021 at Riverview Medical Center. He was born in Woodbridge, NJ in 1939, and lived in Red Bank with his wife of 53 years, Judith. Vincent placed great value on education throughout his life. He earned his undergraduate degree from Upsala College, his Masters in Education from Seton Hall University, and his Doctorate of Education at Rutgers University.

Vincent started his career as a business teacher in Edison Township, NJ, where he also began coaching football at JP Stevens High School. He then became head coach at Edison High School, where he led the team to win the Central Jersey Group IV State Championship in 1976. He returned to Upsala College, and after coaching freshman football at Princeton University, became head coach at Upsala where he was loved and respected.

Throughout over forty years as an educator, he held several administrative positions and eventually became the Superintendent of Schools in Edison before retiring in 2004. In addition to coaching, Vincent worked as a high school official and organized summer leagues for the Middlesex County Recreation Department. In 2018, he and his brother Frank were inducted into the Woodbridge Township Athletic Alumni Association Hall of Fame. He also received numerous awards and honors from state and county education associations.

Vincent mentored, guided, and inspired countless students, educators, players, colleagues, and employees throughout his lifetime. He was known for his warmth, humor, and generosity and will be deeply missed by the many people whose lives he touched.

Surviving are his loving wife Judith; children Suzanne, Joseph, and Cynthia; son-in-law Joseph Freeman; grandchildren Michael and Maya; brother Frank Capraro; sister Dolores Gioffre; and many nieces, nephews, and other extended family.

Services will be private. A public Memorial Mass will be held at later date.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to the Dr. Vincent J Capraro Scholarship Fund through the Edison Township Public School District or a donation in his name to The Parkinson's Foundation.

Arrangements are under the direction of John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, 115 Tindall Road, Middletown.

Vincent Capraro was an incredible educator. I was blessed having him as my cooperating teacher,when I did my student teaching. (75) I had a wonderful teaching career for 36.5 years. Just a wonderful man and I´m grateful to have learned from the best. God Bless Dr. Capraro and his family.

This guy was more than a teacher to me more than a coach to meHe was stern at times and more like a father when he had to be with me he never forgot me and I’ll never forget him he gave me a job and my wife a job.I’ll never forget he never use my first name he always said shutz.Help me tremendously become the person I am and raise a family that I have and three great Daughters. They have said to me now when they are much older boy dad you were stern. I wonder where I got it from he kept one Thumb on me at all times and I won’t forget him.In the most important years of a child’s life and I sure did need that love you coach it will never forget you. .

I had Mr. Capraro as my business teacher. He was a great teacher, and always helpful if you needed extra help in whatever class. His class is probably the only one I never cut! Lol

He was definitely my favorite teacher. He usually had me typing up his list needed for the football game coming up. He'd give me extra credit for helping him.

I am sorry to hear about Coach Capraro. I had the opportunity back in 1986 to meet Coach on a recruiting visit to Upsala for football. I, along with my parents, were very impressed with Coach Capraro’s sincerity, kindness and personality (My high school football coach was a big fan also!).

Although I chose to attend another college to play football (a tough decision), I often thought about Coach. In fact years later-and much to my excitement-Coach interviewed me for a principalship at a local high school. Though I wasn’t selected, it was certainly nice to have the chance to interview with him and catch up!

I eventually became a principal but it would have been a pleasure to have been mentored as a player and principal by Coach!

I am glad to have known him in a small way!

I worked in Edison for 38 years and had numerous opportunities to work with, coach against, socialize with and be mentored as an administrator Dr. Capraro. Vinnie has to have been one of the more successful Superintendents in one of the best school districts in NJ. He had a unique ability to communicate with others and obtain positive results in everything he did. He has had a good life as a husband, father, coach and in his career in education.
