Timothy Powers Obituary

Timothy Michael Powers, 68, of Lubbock, TX passed from this life on earth on August 21, 2023, surrounded by friends and family after a hard-fought battle with prostate cancer.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, August 25, 2023, at Southcrest Baptist Church in Lubbock, TX with Ted Spear officiating. The family will be available to visit one hour prior to the service.

Tim's life began in Detroit, MI on May 22, 1955, as the third of five sons to parents, Glenn and Sue Powers. He spent the first few years of his life in Germany on the Army base where his father was stationed. They later moved to Muncie, IN where he spent his years growing up. He played basketball for the Muncie Central High School Bearcats (class of '73), where he received a scholarship to play at the next level at Wayland Baptist College, in Plainview, TX. This would be where he met the love of his life, Janice Warren. Being a Baptist minister's daughter, Janice showed Tim the importance of having a strong relationship with Christ. He accepted Christ as his personal Lord and Savior and was baptized at First Baptist Church in Plainview, TX. This was only the beginning of their journey together. They eventually got married on July 14, 1978, in Pampa, TX.

Tim and Janice moved back to Plainview after their wedding, and he completed his Master's degree in education through Texas Tech University. He later would also complete his Doctoral degree from Tech, as well. After teaching and coaching in Plainview for a few years, they moved to Pampa.

While in Pampa, Tim was employed on many levels in administration over his 22 years of service. He started as Vice Principal at Pampa High School, then as Principal at Lamar Elementary, as Principal at Pampa Middle School, and eventually as Assistant Superintendent in the Central Office. In his time at Pampa, he was a Sunday School teacher, Deacon, and faithful member of First Baptist Church.

In 2003, Tim and Janice moved to Wichita Falls where he was the Assistant Superintendent and had a stint as Interim Superintendent until he retired. While working for WFISD, he started teaching as an adjunct professor for Wayland Baptist University. They were faithful members of First Baptist Church where he volunteered in the nursery and served as a Deacon.

Since 2014, Tim and Janice have lived in Lubbock. He has worked for Wayland Baptist University as a Professor of Education. He received many accolades, civic awards, and awards over the years, most recently the Board Member Emeritus distinction from WBU. Tim's passion for leadership inspired him to publish two educational leadership books. He and Janice have been active members of Southcrest Baptist Church serving in various capacities over the past 9 years.

Tim was lovingly known as Papaw and enjoyed watching his 7 grandchildren in the many activities they were involved in. Aside from his love for his family, he has always been an avid sports fan but had a special love for the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Many memories were made together with friends and family watching hours and hours of games on TV and in person. He also was an expert fisherman and could bait, cast, or catch any fish, anywhere. Even a turtle or two!

There was no greater love in his life than his love for Jesus Christ. He shared his faith with everyone that he met. He also lived his faith out in how he treated each person in his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Tim leaves behind his wife of 45 years Janice; his son Zane (Ronni) Powers of Dumas, TX; his daughter Janelle (Chris) Styne of Plainview, TX; his grandkids Pierce, Peyton, and Paige Powers and Marleigh, Presleigh, Ryder, and Bubs Styne; his brothers Terry (Becky) Powers of Muncie, IN, Richard (Donna) Powers of Anderson, IN, Shannon (Jean) Powers of Muncie, IN, Shawn (Joanne) Powers of Newton, AL; his uncle Lowell (Donna) Powers of Columbus, IN; and numerous extended family members and dear friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Dr. Tim and Mrs. Janice Powers Education Scholarship, Wayland Baptist University-Lubbock, ? Bobby McCloud, 801 North Quaker, Lubbock, Texas 79416-2408.
