Alan Abernathy, 63, of Covington, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at St Vincent Hospital in Carmel, IN.
Born February 28, 1961, in Danville, IL; Alan was a lifelong resident of Covington, IN, graduating from the class of 1979.
Alan leaves behind his special friend of ((30)) years, Pam Giordano, nieces Melanie (Alan) Newman of Pemberville, OH, Hope (Steve) Carlson of Mahomet, IL; Pam’s mother, Roseann Giordano; Pam’s sister, Jackie Giordano-Morgan; Pam’s niece, Tina Jones; an aunt Shirley Coffing, several cousins, and many friends who thought of him as family, whom he will be greatly missed by. He was preceded in death by his parents, Orville and Maxine (Coffing) Abernathy and brother Ron Abernathy.
Alan always had a love for old tractors and was a member of the Wabash Valley Steam and Gas Club. He had restored many tractors over the years and enjoyed participating in tractor drives with several of his friends who shared the same passion. He was an avid dirt track racing fan, and spent many nights and weekends following the sport. Alan even got Pam into racing, securing her a job as a scorer at the Vermilion County Speedway. For several years he devoted many hours to helping the Ferguson family on their race cars, even going as far as to open up his home garage to be the “race shop” where he would spend hours with them throughout the week getting the car just right. Throughout their many years of racing, whatever track they were at, Alan was always there showing his support and getting his hands dirty on the car.
Alan may have been best known for operating Dinsmore’s Service in Covington since 1976, which has become known to all of the locals as one of the go-to spots in town to have your car serviced and a place to stop in for good conversation. Over the years, Alan taught his trade to several young employees, most who went on to become lifelong friends. On any given day you could find multiple friends stopping in to sit in the shop and visit with him, and he would always leave them with a witty comment and an ornery giggle sure to follow. Alan will be deeply missed down at his station by many.
