Alan Joseph Decato, 67, of Naugatuck, affectionately known as “Uncle Al”, beloved uncle and friend, passed away on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at Waterbury Hospital. Alan was born June 13, 1956 at Norwalk Hospital to Doran and Gloria Decato.

Alan spent his early years growing up in Norwalk with his mother and younger brother, James. He spent his high school years in Bethel, then moved to Danbury, Naugatuck, a short stint in Detroit MI, and then back to Naugatuck where Alan made his final landing spot.

After graduating Bethel High School, Alan worked for pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim, mixing chemicals. He had several jobs in between and then spent the last several years at Engineered Fibers Technology where he cut and processed Kevlar fibers until he retired.

Alan was an avid golfer, a better golfer than he led on, you usually only heard “nice” or “oh crap”. Alan enjoyed going on a yearly fishing trip with long-time best bud Erick Metz, usually catching more of a buzz than fish. For over 35 years, Alan was a proud member of the Boneheads paintball team, a group of friends and misfits, that gained and lost numerous members over that time, but Alan referred to them all as his other brothers. Alan spent countless weekends at their home base E.M.R. event park in New Milford, PA. This is where Alan co-joined the world-renowned Blue’s Crew paintball team, traveling all over the country, kicking butt, taking names and making countless new friends and members of his paintball family from Florida up to Canada.

Alan was a proud “dead head” and could regularly be seen wearing tie dye shirts. He spent his late teens and most of his 20’s travelling and following the Dead all over the northeast, venue to venue, in over-cramped cars and VW buses. Al’s specialty was sneaking into concerts and then finding ways to sneak friends in with him. “It’s the same story the crow told me, it’s the only one he knows, like the morning sun you come and like the wind you go”. -Jerry Garcia

One of Alan’s greatest joys in life along with his brother, James, was spending vacations, holidays, and just time in general with his niece/goddaughter, nephew, and great niece and nephews. Though not blood related, Alan’s undying love for them would go unquestioned, he was Uncle Al. Alan enjoyed engaging in deep conversations with his great nephew Nicky Jr (4), like how does Aquaman breathe under water, and that the hulk is only angry most of the time.  Alan took great pride in being named co-godfather with his brother Jimmy to his niece Ashley, it meant the world to him and the two of them surpassed any and all expectations of that duty.

Alan is survived by his chosen siblings, Sal and Patty Chieffalo (Stratford); niece/goddaughter, Ashley Chieffalo; nephew, Nicholas Sr and Michelle Chieffalo (Monroe); great niece, Allison Butler; and great nephews, Christopher Butler and Nicholas Chieffalo Jr. Alan was predeceased by his mother, Gloria Decato and brother, James Decato.

Per Alan’s request, no services will be held at this time, a celebration of life will be held at a later date.
