FAIRLAWN - Alan E. Ederer, 96, of Fairlawn, died peacefully at his home on Friday, April 19, 2024 with his wife, Lorin, and his daughter, Erin, at his side. Alan was born March 15, 1928, in Akron to William J. and Bessie Ederer. He graduated from Buchtel High School and attended the University of Akron.
Alan had a long and successful career starting as a real estate agent with his father's brokerage, Ederer Realty, selling many new homes being constructed in Fairlawn Reserve and Fairlawn Heights. In the early 1960's he started developing Lawson's stores throughout northern Ohio leading to numerous other development ventures.
Alan served for many years as an active director of the former Falls Savings and Loan and was a Life Member of the Home Builders Association serving Summit and Portage Counties. He quietly helped key people get a better education or a start in business. One of Alan's favorite phrases was " never worked a day of my life." He would explain that he so loved what he did and the people he helped that it was his pleasure, not work. Because of this commitment, he went to his office and managed his properties well into his nineties.
Two favorite activities he shared with Lorin were walking with friends at Summit Mall and taking people for boat rides on the Portage Lakes. He was a very fast walker, and it was a challenge for others to keep up with him unless they were having an interesting conversation.
Alan was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, and his first wife, Dorothy Jean Wiley Ederer. He is survived by his wife, Lorin Ederer; his children, David Ederer, Todd Ederer, Patty Carlson and Erin Bethea; grandchildren, Erika Demaio, Wiley Ederer (Cara), Grant Alan Ederer, and Grace Ederer; and great-granddaughter, Avery Demaio. Special friends and caregivers include secretary Corrine Sipe, Arthur Kohtz, Marcus McKinney, and Jackie Christian.
A memorial service will be held 10:00 AM, Saturday, April 27, 2024 at Faith Lutheran Church with Rev. Jean Hansen officiating. The family will gather with visitors after the service at the church. Interment to follow at Rose Hill Burial Park, Fairlawn.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to Faith Lutheran Church, 2726 W. Market St., Fairlawn, Ohio. (www.faithlutheranchurch.org)

I was introduced to Alan by my late husband Steve when we owned the Harbor Inn in Portage Lakes. He was a very kind man, who very much supported and enjoyed the Portage Lakes area. He was a deep supporter of the Home Builders Association. He did a lot to support the community he cared about. He was insightful, supportive and wanted to see the area thrive. He touched many lives and will be greatly missed. My sincere condolences to the family.
