Alan Richards Obituary

Alan Logan Richards, lovingly known as Mr. Rich and Unkey Munkey, passed away suddenly on November 1st, 2025, at the age of 39. Born on July 2nd, 1986, in Houston, Texas, Alan lived a life full of purpose, service, laughter, and love.

Alan grew up in Katy, Texas, where he developed a passion for learning, service, and connection that defined his life. In October 2006, he proudly enlisted in the United States Army, serving six honorable years and achieving the rank of Sergeant. During his service, he completed a 15-month deployment to Iraq (2007–2008) and a 12-month deployment to Afghanistan (2010), where he earned the Combat Action Badge for his bravery and dedication.

After leaving the military in 2012, Alan returned to Katy and pursued his degree in mathematics from the University of Houston, later becoming an influential Geometry Teacher and Team Lead at Cy-Ranch High School. Known around campus for his ever-present positivity and his booming voice projecting the phrase, "It's a great day to be a Mustang," Alan inspired students and colleagues alike. He was actively involved in several school clubs, including Voices for Change and the Badminton Club, where his energy and encouragement helped countless students thrive.

Outside the classroom, Alan was a man of many passions. He was a devoted husband and father, an amazing chef, and a lifelong learner who could talk knowledgeably about almost any topic. He loved pickleball, board games, video games, and tutoring students after school. To his nieces and nephew, he was affectionately known as Unkey Munkey, an uncle, mentor, and friend whose love knew no bounds.

Alan's heart was as big as his smile. He met people exactly where they were, offering empathy, humor, and encouragement in every interaction. He was famous for his dad jokes, his generosity, and his unwavering willingness to help others, no matter how busy he was. His legacy is one of kindness, laughter, and inspiration that will continue to live on through everyone whose life he touched.

Alan is survived by his loving wife, Angela Caye Richards, and his son, Logan Richards; his parents, Karen and Robert Richards; and his brothers, Lee Alley and Jason Richards, along with his cherished nieces and nephew.

A wake will be held on Friday, November 21st, from 5–8 PM, and a funeral and celebration of life on Saturday, November 22nd, from 2–5 PM, both at Schmidt Funeral Home, located off Grand Parkway in Katy, Texas. Alan will receive military honors and be laid to rest at the Houston National Cemetery on Monday, November 24th, at 1:30 PM. All services are open to the public.

Among Alan's favorite sayings were: "Life before death, strength before weakness, journey before destination," "The most important step is the next step," and, of course, "It's a great day to be a Mustang." He lived those words every day, and through his example, he showed us all how to do the same.
