Alan Gregory Stone (Greg), 74, of
Chesapeake, VA passed away on Monday, December 15, 2025. Greg was born in
Louisville, Kentucky in 1951 to the late Leland Mann Stone and Gladys Carter Stone. He was a graduate of Indiana University with a BA, MS, and Ph.D. It was there that he met his college sweetheart, Jennifer (Jennie), whom he married in 1972 and shared a devoted 53-year marriage.
Greg started his career after college working for the Indiana University Police Department and later the police academy where he discovered his love for teaching. In 1988, Greg and Jennie relocated to Southern California after he was recruited to the California Lutheran University School of Business as an "Entrepreneur in Residence and served as chair of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Global Trade Center. While living in California, they welcomed their daughter, Sarah Elizabeth (Sarah Beth) in 1990.
In 1995, the Stone family relocated to
Virginia Beach, VA where Greg began his 30-year career at Regent University. He joined the faculty there as an assistant professor and made timely progress through the ranks to achieve tenure in 2003 and full professor status in 2009. Among his many accomplishments as a faculty member, Greg recently was honored with the Faculty Award for Excellence in the area of teaching at the December 2025 faculty and staff meeting. The award was based on the independent ranking of the candidates by four different reviewers. As the following comments in his award noted: "Dr. Stone modeled the rare blend of educator, builder, and humble servant that quietly lifts an entire school. His foundational posture has been: students first, people always, and excellence. Why? Because of his love and commitment to Jesus Christ. Dr. Stone an educator at heart a strategist, entrepreneur, and administrator first and foremost a teacher - clear, eloquent, and relentlessly prepared. His unmatched communication skills have shaped a generation of students and colleagues alike."
Besides academia, Greg had many hobbies over the years including building additions on their house and managing an orchard on their property in
Bloomington, IN. He built a G scale model train garden railroad in their backyard in Virginia Beach and owned horses on 5 acres in
Chesapeake, VA. His most recent passion was collecting, redesigning, selling, and shooting some very unique firearms. Greg always kept busy with some creative project at home.
Left to cherish Greg's memory are his loving wife Jennie Stone, his daughter Sarah Beth Cosgrove, son-in-law Justin Cosgrove, and grandson Henry Cosgrove who will all miss him dearly. Greg was preceded in death by his father Leland Stone, his mother Gladys Stone, and his brothers Paul Stone and Jerry Stone.
Greg will be remembered for his sense of humor, living life to the full, his kind and humble servant leadership, always seeing what others are capable of and helping them achieve their goals, having a calling faithfully stewarded, and a legacy that will continue to bear fruit for generations to come.
