William Scott Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Graham Funeral Home & Cremation Services on Dec. 30, 2025.
William Nelson Scott, 80, passed away December 24, 2025. William was born to the late William A. and Amanda M. Scott. He was also predeceased by his brother, James S. Scott.
William was born in Chesapeake, Virginia and later his family moved to Suffolk where he graduated from East Suffolk High School in 1964. William served and was Honorably discharged from the United States Air Force in 1970. Shortly thereafter, he began work at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock, before transferring to Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, where he retired in 2013 as a Sheetmetal Supervisor from Shop 17.
On December 18, 1974 while in the ballast tank at the bottom of a submarine at the Newport News Shipyard, he was approached by a fellow worker who shared the True Gospel with William and he was gloriously saved. He later transferred to Norfolk Naval Shipyard where he began attending a lunchtime Bible study class organized by a fellow shipyard worker. It was there that his love and learning of the Truth of the Gospel began to grow. He developed deep and long lasting friendships with several men who later became prominent Pastors of several local churches. William's zeal for sharing the Gospel to the lost, culminated in his being ordained into the ministry in May 1992 at Mount Calvary Baptist Church. He was always eager to accept invitations to preach at various churches and he served to fill the pulpit at Prince of Peace Pentecostal Church in Portsmouth. In December 1996, he moved his family's membership to Tabernacle Baptist Church. He served in numerous capacity's including ushering, Sunday School Teacher. Sunday School Superintendent, Choir member and Yokefellow. He attended many Tabernacle Seminary classes and especially loved those taught by Dr. Ray Fulayter and Dr. Walter Yoho. He was a firm believer in "Study to show yourself approved unto God" and read avidly and later became a "You Tuber" of biblical subjects. His final job as courier afforded him the opportunity to travel and share the Gospel to the sick and others that he encountered.
His heart and soul, other than the Gospel, was the love of his wife, son and daughter. He was a wonderful provider and protector and leader in his home. He was NOT a hypocrite when it came to raising his children. he had strong convictions about how a Christian individual and family should live and he led by example.
Will, you have done well. You have not wasted your life doing the vain things but those that have eternal reward. You will be missed the most by your wife and children, who have a huge void in their hearts when you left us. But we know where you are. We know God loved you before and even more than we do. He showed that in the way He called you home.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Brenda; son, Zachary; daughter, Dorothy and soon to be son in law Micaiah Bowmaster. His brothers, Fred Scott (Sheila), of Chesapeake; Phillip Scott (Kim) of Suffolk; Maurice Scott, of Virginia Beach; Calvin Scott (Alicia) of Denver, Co; and sister, Barbara Ann Jones, of Norfolk. Sister in laws, Debra Meredith (Rev. Robert Meredith), of Madison Heights, Virginia; Sharon DeMary, of Portsmouth. Godson, Titus and his parents Erik and Ruth Whiting and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends will miss his unmistakable presence.
The family will receive friends at Graham Funeral Home, 1112 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake on Monday, January 5, 2026 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. I did not know this gentleman, but was drawn to read his life story because of his kind face; it showed the love of Jesus! I am sorry for your earthly loss of William, but we Christians can rejoice in knowing that we will be reunited one day in Heaven with loved ones because of the promise of eternal life when we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. Praise God!
