Albert "Al" William Kamer, 95, of
Louisville, Kentucky, was born on January 28, 1929, and entered into eternal life on Friday, July 12, 2024.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha E. Buehner Kamer, his daughter, Karen A. Kamer, his parents, Albert and Frances Olliges Kamer, siblings, Cecilia Kamer, Loretta Lush, Frances Lush, Genevieve Kamer, and Raymond Kamer, and his half-sister, Evelyn Kamer Kaelin.
Left to keep his memory alive are his daughters, Marilyn (Gary) Kurtz, Barbara (Greg) Epley, Francie Kamer, and Ann (Jay) Kresen, his grandchildren, Albert (Devon) Bowman, Angela (Jim) Nolan, and Sarah Kresen, his great-grandchildren, AJ, Jaxson, and Liam Bowman, and Edward, Emmett, Sloane, and Elliott Nolan, his siblings, Angela Kamer, Mildred Spalding, Florence Kamer, Robert (Jeannie) Kamer, and Carroll (Rose) Kamer, as well as his sister-in-law, Edith McClain.
Al grew up during hard times with many life struggles that would have left others bitter or angry, but he had a tremendous way of throwing out the bad and remembering the good. His attitude about life and good nature were present all the way to the end, evidenced by the grin and handshake he gave the Hospice nurses the day before he passed.
Assigned to the 5th RCT, Al served honorably in the Korean War from 1951-1952. He often joked about his draft papers saying his friends and neighbors selected him to go; he would say, "What did I ever do to them that they would send me there?!"
After Korea, Al came home to marry Bertha. They shared 69 years together and had 5 daughters. He worked at Pepsi-Cola for 41 years, which was quite a feat as the majority of employees didn't last that long, yet he often joked that he worked harder in retirement. From working with Francie at NationsRent, helping with the construction of Marilyn's house and office building, working countless hours with Barbara on various jobs, and more, Al always took care of his family and friends with hard work and determination. He was a member of St. Stephen Martyr Catholic Church, the MUSCL Senior Wellness Center, and most recently the KILROY military vehicle group.
Al was a wonderful person and a great example to all of us. He especially enjoyed playing cards with family or at the Senior Wellness Center where he attended with his brother, Carroll. He also liked to cut down trees, and once when left unsupervised, he earned the nickname "Daddy Beaver" for a reason! It will never be forgotten how he'd sit around the campfire at family gatherings, strumming a guitar he didn't know how to play while singing country songs, always ending the night with a rousing rendition of "Goodnight, Irene." Al was devoted to his family, loving each one in his own way, and in return his memory will be cherished deeply as we, too, forever look for the good.
His funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 22, 2024 at St. Stephen Martyr Catholic Church 2931 Pindell Avenue with burial to follow in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. – 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 21, 2024 at Ratterman & Sons Funeral Home 3800 Bardstown Road.
