Alice Frey, age 92, passed away on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses, Kansas. She was born on August 10, 1933, in Peabody, Kansas, the daughter of Otto Louis and Lettie Leona (Jeffrey) Frey.
Alice grew up on a farm near Elmdale, Kansas, where she attended grade and high school, graduating from Elmdale Rural High School in 1951. During her youth, she was active in 4-H, her church, and many school activities. She went on to attend Kansas State College to become a Home Demonstration Agent. Alice received numerous career awards along with receiving the Nationally Recognized Service Award from the National Association for Extension Home Economists. She later returned to Kansas State University where she earned her master's degree. During her career Alice played a very valuable role in the rural area. She taught many classes to adults and children, took kids to 4-H camps and meetings, and spent many hours helping them learn parliamentary procedure.
Alice's home economist friends couldn't believe that this allergy prone young lady was going to survive dusty Southwest, Kansas but survive she did, all while helping others make the most of living in the area that she loved. During her time in Grant County, she impacted many lives and made many lifetime friendships. Alice dedicated 40 years of her career to the Cooperative Extension Service, serving as a Home Economist in Bourbon, Clay, and Grant counties before retiring in Grant County in 1995. As soon as Alice retired, she spent her retirement planning extensive trips and traveling all over the world. She will be remembered by the many international trinkets she brought back for many in the community.
Throughout her life, Alice was deeply involved in her faith and community. She was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Organization, the Kansas Association of Family and Community Education, Women of Purpose, and Business and Professional Women. Alice's commitment to her beloved community garnered her notable awards 2019 Random Acts of Kindness Winner and 2010 Citizen of the Year.
Alice is survived by her nieces and nephew, Janet Cantwell and husband Chuck of Tryon, Oklahoma, Jay Frey and wife Stephanie of Wichita, Kansas, and Nancy Jarecki and husband Andrew of New York City, New York; great-nieces, Julie, Ellen and Jeremy Louise; great-nephews, Thomas, Maxson, and Jasper, and many friends. Alice is preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Lettie Frey; brother, Royce Frey; sister, Beulah Haver; and brother and sister-in-law, J.M. and Louise Frey.
Memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the First United Methodist Church or Ulysses 4-H Council in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave, Ulysses, KS 67880. Condolences may be posted at www.garnandfuneralhomes.com.
