Amylee Lathrop Picone, age 67, of Ellington, CT ended her long and courageous battle with breast cancer on June 14, 2023 with her loving children by her side. She was born on October 15, 1955 in Norwich, CT to Dudley and Amie Lathrop. Amy received her nursing diploma in 1975 from the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Worcester, MA, and spent 43 years working in healthcare as a Registered Nurse. She had an active RN license in New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. In her last role she worked as the Utilization Manager for Baystate Home Health in Springfield, MA. Amy dedicated her life to caring for others in need and was always available with meaningful advice and compassion.
An avid dog lover and pet collector, Amy was also a talented piano player, and loved to utilize her artistic skills when making crafts with her grandchildren. Amy took great pleasure from gardening and planting her beautiful flowers. She also had a bit of a wild side, was always down for a good margarita, enjoyed live music and concerts, or an impromptu motorcycle ride into the night. Amy was radiant, always had a clever comeback and had a passion for travel and the beach. During her life she created lasting memories with her family on trips to Cape Cod, Maine, Avalon, Disney World, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, and Aruba. A true adventurer, on her final trip she flew on the world's longest direct flight from NYC to Singapore where she spent 11 days touring and feasting on the local cuisine with her family.
Despite her diagnosis, she always greeted everyone with a big smile and her grandchildren with big hugs. She always wanted to know "what she could do to help" and she remained a curious, engaged observer of the world with an optimistic heart. Her illness took much from her, but she held onto her deep love for family and friends which filled her soul until the very end. She is a hero to her family and will be dearly missed.
Amy is survived by her daughter Jocelyn DeNichilo and her husband Stephen of Chatham, NJ, her son Justin Picone and his wife Grace Koh of Brooklyn, NY, her treasured grandchildren who she loved sooo soo much, Luca and Tyler DeNichilo and Oona and Zumi Picone, and her former spouse Samuel Picone of Somers, CT. Amy is also survived by her brother Bruce Lathrop, who lives in Massachusetts.
At Amy's request, there will be no funeral or memorial service. The family will notify loved ones in the future of a small celebration of life gathering. In lieu of flower donations please make donations in Amylee's memory to the National Breast Cancer Foundation (https://www.nationalbreastcancer.org/) or Cure Childhood Cancer (https://curechildhoodcancer.org/).
