Anthony Cannon Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Mount Laurel Home for Funerals & Cremation Services, Inc. on Sep. 14, 2025.
Anthony Jerome Cannon, MD FACE passed away on September 14, 2025, in Marlton, NJ surrounded by his loving family.

Dr. Cannon was a distinguished clinical endocrinologist with over four decades of experience in the medical field. He began his academic journey at Clark University and went on to earn his medical degree from Cornell University in New York, graduating in 1981. He was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1985 and later obtained subspecialty certification in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism in 1987. His expertise was widely regarded and deeply respected.

Holding medical licenses in both New Jersey and Pennsylvania, Dr. Cannon made significant contributions to both medical education and clinical practice. In January 2024, he was appointed Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University. His final clinical role was with Cooper Care Alliance in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, where he continued to serve patients with compassion and excellence.

Beyond his clinical work, Dr. Cannon was actively involved in medical research, publishing extensively in esteemed journals such as the Journal of Managed Care & Specialty Pharmacy and Diabetic Medicine. He also held leadership positions within the American Diabetes Association, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, and the South Jersey Medical Association.

Among his many accolades, Dr. Cannon received the American Diabetes Association Chair's Citation Award in 2015 and was named a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology in 2012. His lifelong commitment to advancing the field of endocrinology and improving patient care left a lasting impact on his colleagues, students, and the broader medical community. His legacy continues to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Born in Copenhagen, New York, and a longtime resident of Mount Laurel, New Jersey, Dr. Cannon cherished his free time and filled it with meaningful pursuits. He traveled widely, enjoyed golfing and gardening, and found quiet pleasure in reading. A true audiophile, he appreciated the art of sound, and his love for cars was more than a hobby-he proudly entered his own vehicles in car shows, sharing his enthusiasm with others. Above all, Dr. Cannon's greatest joy came from spending time with his family and friends, whose presence enriched his life beyond measure.

He was predeceased by his mother Arrie LaVerne Cannon, his brother, Darrly Cannon and his nephew, Stephen Cannon. He is survived by his wife of 10 years and two days, Mayreni Fermin-Cannon; his son, Jarred Cannon; his sister Pamela Wright; his father, Ron Smoot, his Mother in Law, Mayra Fermin; his Nephews, Terrence Hill (Terica); his great nieces, Zaria and Zakia Hill and great nephew, Zamir Hill; his friends Arthur Landolfi and Dr. Vincent Leoni and his best furry friends, Zoe and Lulu.

Family and friends are invited to attend his viewing on Saturday, September 20, 2025, from 10am-12pm and then again on Sunday, September 21, 20205, from 10-11am both at the Mount Laurel Home for Funerals 212 Ark Road Mount Laurel, NJ 08054. His funeral service will take place on Sunday September 21, 2025 at 11am at the funeral home.

I was shocked and saddened to hear that Dr. Cannon passed away. He was a truly exceptional doctor and provided such outstanding, compassionate and dignified care. He treated patients with patience and respect. I was terrified and newly diagnosed when I met him and he took the time to help me achieve ideal control of my diabetes. I am still devastated, and I am an emotional reck after receiving the email informing us of the passing of Dr. Cannon on September 14th 2025.. I have been under Dr. Cannon's care starting at the Willingboro BMA office, in the late 1990s, and was so lucky that Dr. Cannon always notified me when he was moving on to a new adventure. Dr. Cannon was an amazing person, with his subtle voice and humor, and a fantastic endocrinologist as the kicker. who thought that the Medtronic insulin pump therapy would help with the management of my diabetes and that I would feel a lot better. Really? Feel a lot better Dr. Cannon? Dr. Cannon was always right.. I had surgery with another doctor and Dr. Cannon stopped by to check in on me later that day and because my sugars were unstable he had the hospital not release me for a couple more days. The pull and respect for Dr. Cannon was and still is impeccable.. And here I thought that he was taking me under his wing like a son because we talked about everything besides my health problems and fixes or maybe I was another challenge that he wanted to take on. Well, now I know that this wonderful human being of a doctor has quite a few hundred/thousands of son's and daughter's, and a huge set of wings for all of us patients, and of course his love and passion and his skills for helping humanity for all, just took over With his calming voice positive attitude, and warm smile, even when I was the bad boy diabetic and expecting the worst, at my next appointment he managed to make me feel better, and get me back on track. Every question that I had for Dr. Cannon was answered with the knowledge of just having read the book or writing it. It was like we were thinking the same thing at times. To me, he always had the right answers for me. But I wasn't the only lucky one, which I am just finding out. He was increasingly!!
I still tear up, kind of cry, and choke up when I talk about Dr. Cannon with my family and friends. I will miss you tremendously, Dr. Cannon..
I am actually a bit frightened and nervous about my diabetes future now, because Dr. Cannon always had my complete trust and confidence of his incredible ability and knowledge of his craft in endocrinology and world events and that he knew me, my insuin pump for almost three decades and I don't think that I will have that same kind of treatment, friendship, knowledge, and humor especially with my diabetes in such a short time. Well in my life time. I am also 70.
Dr. Cannon has kept me positive, secure, healthy and happy even though I have been a type 1 diabetic since 1987, whenIwasfirstdiagnosed. I was a mess until I started working with my/everybody's Dr. Cannon.
I guess that I'm spoiled now..

I am sending my deepest condolences and prayers to Dr. Cannon's family, friends, patients and colleagues because I am truly heartbroken, devastated, saddened and shocked at Dr. Cannon's passing and I can't even imagine how you all are with this horrible tragedy, especially the ones seeing this wonderful human being on a daily basis..

Dr. Cannon, I will always love you and miss you for what you have done for me medically and mentally and I will never forget you, brother
(((R.I.P.))) Younger Man

Orlando W Beckles/May 28th 1955.

Ps- Dr. Cannon also got my A1C down from between 10 to 14 readings to a 7.6, which is my ((lowest golf score, a 76.)) "errr, once for both, because of me of course....now I fluctuate between an 8 and 9.2 A1C, for now.
((How ironical!?))

After my endocrinologist in Delaware contracted Covid, I found myself searching for a new endocrinologist. Because my bonus daughter and my husband, her dad, had so much success with their doctors at Jefferson, I searched their website and found Dr. Cannon. I wasn't expecting the time he took, after viewing my records from my previous doctor, to explain his goal for getting my diabetes under control. And after two visits, following all his directives, I had reached my goal. He was a blessing and I'd never had a doctor who was so compassionate and caring. When I was admitted to the hospital in Delaware with Covid, I refused to be treated by their endocrinologist. When I mentioned Dr. Cannon's name, his exact words "Yes, I know him and his research very well. Young lady you have one of the 'best endocrinologist' on the east cost" and they collaborated together with my care until I was discharged. And when Dr. Cannon left Jefferson, I followed him to Cooper. And now, with his passing, I'm at a lost because I doubt if I'll ever find a most compassionate, caring doctor as he was. My deepest condolences to his family, for allowing him to share his knowledge, expertise and compassion with those of us who benefitted from his compassionate care. He was loved and he will be truly missed by his family, friends, colleagues and patients as well as those he left behind to cherish his memory.

I am very sad to learn of Dr. Cannon's passing. My husband and I have been his patients for so many years, following him from Hamilton to Cherry Hill, never did we consider getting another doctor. His medical knowledge was unsurpassed, he was a master of his craft. We just had appointments with him in early September. I knew something was not right. I ended the call by telling him, "We love you." Today our hearts are hurting. I will smile when I think of you looking at my labs and telling me, "You're boring." You took care of your patients to the very end. Rest easy Dr. C.

My family and I are deeply saddened by Dr. Cannon´s passing, and we are keeping the Cannon family in our prayers. I had the privilege of working alongside Dr. Cannon as his medical scribe, and I am truly grateful for that experience. He was hardworking, dedicated, and compassionate-qualities that shone through in everything he did. The way he cared for those around him-patients, colleagues, students, and his family-will always stay with me. He not only provided excellent medical care but also treated his patients with warmth and kindness, as if they were his own family. He has surely inspired me as a healthcare worker as I am sure he has inspired many others. May Dr. Cannon rest in peace, and may God bless his loved ones during this time.

Expressing my condolences to Tony´s family. I feel blessed to be Tony´s colleague and friend. We served together on the local ADA Advisory Board and would call each other to exchange ideas. His passion for the welfare of patients and the community was unmatched. He spoke so eloquently but his legacy will live through his actions and work to promote diabetes care for so many. He was a truly wonderful person!

September 18, 2025

I have known Tony professionally for nearly 20 years, had the pleasure to call him a colleague for the past 10 years, and the absolute fortune to share a cubicle with him for the past 4 years. Up close, he was just an amazing individual-a true one of one. Every day, every patient, every case was the most important and exciting case he had ever seen. We could go back and forth for days (if not weeks!) about his favorite or most complex cases.
I have never met another colleague who opened himself up to his patients as much as Tony-routinely welcoming personal calls and messages directly from his patients. But it was always done in an effort to provide the care that he knew each and every one of his patients deserved!
Losing him definitely leaves a large void in our endocrine community. However, through his example, his enthusiasm, his teaching, we know that his impact will be felt for generations to come.
May you rest in peace...

I am so very sorry for the loss of Dr. Cannon. My family followed him from office to office and the distance never mattered. If it wasn´t for Dr Cannon´s unwavering dedication this healthy baby girl whom is now six years old would not have been here. He took excellent care of my daughter while she was pregnant. She is type 1 as well as hypothyroidism. He´s also taken care of me, my husband, and three of our daughters. He always said that my oldest child and her pregnancy gave him grey hairs. He was truly loved by our family and are extremely broken hearted for his family and friends. He will never be forgotten.

Dr. Cannon was always full of joy when he would come in the office. When I 1st met him at Jefferson, he told me that he was going to fire me as a patient if I didn't get myself together that was in 2019. I've been riding with him every since, because he actually took the time to learn me as a person and not treat me like a patient. He cared for us like we cared for him. Dr. Cannon you will truly be missed.

Dr.Cannon always spent time answering all my questions. He was amusing and entertaining especially when explaining issues that manner to him such as his office or expressing his opinion of weight loss medications on Twitter. I pray for his family and friends. I will miss interacting with him during our appointments.

I was so sorry to hear of Dr Cannon´s passing. I had the privilege of working with him in the Willingboro-BMA office back in the mid 9O´s & early 2000´s. He was a super smart Dr & expected a lot from his staff but we learned a lot from him & loved his personality. One of my favorite memories is when he would tell us what to tell a patient, what medications to call in & would end his conversation with us with "make me look good". I also remember his love of cars & that he would have a guy detail his car right in the parking lot at the office. I´m praying for his family & friends at this difficult time.

Dr. Cannon was my Endocrinologist for nearly 2 years. He was very intelligent and connected with his patients on a personal level when it came to overcoming health concerns. Thank you, Dr. Cannon, for everything you've done for me. You will be missed.

I had the honor and privilege of spending a month with Dr. Cannon in April 2025 as a medical student rotating with him in his office. He is the most brilliant physician I have ever known and he will deeply impact me for the rest of my life. Never have I worked with a doctor who taught me so much, printed me so many articles to read, or walked me through decision making like he did. I have also never laughed so much on a rotation. I will be pursuing endocrinology as my career and I can only hope to continue his legacy in the field he was so endlessly passionate about. May his memory be a blessing and give strength to those close to him.

My sincere condolences to the family of Dr Anthony Cannon. I have known Dr Cannon for over 40 years as he was my daughter´s endocrinologist. Then I became his patient 25 years ago when I became a diabetic. We always regarded him with such respect for his dedication and outstanding knowledge. Dr Cannon went over and above in helping me understand the ups and downs of my
diabetes and overall health.
Rest in Peace Dr Cannon. You will be sorely missed.

I'm so saddened by the passing of Dr. Cannon. I have been a patient of his since 2009 and he was by far the most compassionate doctor I've ever had. He listened to all my concerns at every appointment and we spent just as much time talking about current events as we did about my health. He always asked about my family and helped me navigate the grief of losing my mother to breast cancer last year. I'll never forget the first time I went to see him at the start of my journey with Graves' disease back in 2009 and he was so excited because I had the most extreme symptoms he'd ever seen and he promised me he'd be able to manage my condition...a promise he kept for 16 years. I will miss the "smiley face" or "frowny face" he'd always give me after every appointment depending on how well I was doing at the time.

To his family - My most heartfelt condolences for the loss of this incredible man and doctor and thank you for sharing him with us. I only knew him as his patient, but he always treated me with the utmost care and respect and for that I will always be grateful.

I am terribly shocked and sorry to hear of Dr. Cannon's passing. I was a long-time patient of his and honestly looked forward to seeing him, not only as a practitioner but as a fellow traveler on this weird journey of life. His wide-ranging intellect, passionate opinions, and gentle humor were apparent in all my interactions with him. He will be greatly missed! My condolences to his friends and family, and his memory will be cherished by the many people he impacted and helped to heal over the years. What a tremendous loss to the entire community. Blessings and comfort to you.

I´m not someone who usually posts on guestbooks, but in this case, I felt it was necessary. Dr. Cannon left a lasting impression on me, and I want to share just how much he was respected and appreciated.

In just one visit, he offered me light and reassurance during a time of uncertainty. His exceptional bedside manner, combined with his genuine compassion, steady confidence, and remarkable intelligence, made it easy to trust him. He had a way of putting things into perspective that brought real peace of mind.

It was clear his work wasn´t just a profession-it was one of his many passions. Talking with him, you could tell he truly loved what he did, and that he treated helping others as more than just a job.

To his family-please know his impact reached far beyond his practice. I´m sure this is just one of many heartfelt messages honoring the difference he made in people´s lives.
