Dr. Arthur Allen Winters (née Weinberg) born April 27, 1925, NYC, NY, passed away February 6, 2024, in his 99th year, in Fountain Hills, Arizona. He was the proud son of Hungarian immigrants Joseph and Selma Weinberg of New Rochelle, NY. Arthur was married to his beloved Peggy Fincher Winters for nearly 40 years.
A true New Yorker, Arthur was born on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and grew up in The Bronx and New Rochelle. He volunteered for military service at the age of 17 and served as a US Navy fighter pilot in WWII, flying the Hellcat on carriers in the Pacific. After New Rochelle HS, he was sent for Navy training to Williams College (class of 1946) graduating with a BA in economics after the war in 1948. He continued his education at Pace University (MBA) and Temple University (EdD).
Pursuing his career in advertising, he started his own agency in the Empire State Building, with many fashion accounts. From there he was asked to teach at The Fashion Institute of Technology, State University of NY. He became the founding chairman of the department of Advertising and Marketing Communications. He was a beloved leader and supporter of his faculty and students. He wrote many text and industry books and videos, named and launched many brands like Isotoner Gloves; was an early creator of the brand-marketing concept. He and his wife, Prof. Peggy Winters, were partners in their TFI Geomarketing consulting firm. They co-wrote Blogs and many books, conducted international seminars and consulted in integrated and experiential marketing communications. They met at FIT and completed their career team-teaching in the International Affairs and Professional Studies Programs at FIT. They taught/worked in over a dozen countries.
Known as Art, Artie, Arturo, Arthur, and Peggy's Arthurilla, he is known as a fabled cartoonist and caricaturist. His other interests included supporting the Gorilla Foundation, travelling, scuba diving, swimming, dancing, music, nature walks, teaching, lifelong learning, wordsmithing, crossword puzzles, and most importantly, spending time with family and friends. "A la Familia!"
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Fincher Winters; his 3 children: Carolyn (Clark) Hulse, Nancy Winters (Scott Murray), Neil Winters, sister Miriam (Burt) Bloom; grandchildren Ben (Maureen Sheehan) Hulse & Dan (Anna) Hulse; great grandchildren: Jimmy, Mary Carolyn, Nova & Mia; his father-in-law, Jim Fincher; sister in-law, Connie (Jack) Rauen; and a loving family of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great greats; plus numerous cousins here and abroad.
Funeral services will be held first on February 21st, from 6-9 p.m., at Hansen Desert Hills Mortuary, 6500 E. Bell Road, Scottsdale, AZ. The service in New York on March 3rd at 10:00 a.m. at Ballard-Durand Funeral Home, 2 Maple Ave. White Plains, NY, with interment at Sharon Gardens, Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, NY. Other memorials will be held at FIT in NYC and in Woodstock, NY in the spring or summer.
