Ashley "Pete" Carothers, Jr., a beacon of strength and joy, left this world on September 23, 2024, in South Bend, IN, after a life rich with love and accomplishment. Born on November 1, 1941, in Oxford, MS, Pete's journey began as the cherished son of Ashley Carothers Sr. and Edna (Davison) Carothers, both of whom had preceded him in death, and it was from them that he inherited his indomitable spirit.
Pete's life was a testament to the power of dedication and hard work. A proud graduate of Washington High School, he left his mark on the field as a football player, later being honored with an induction into the school's Hall of Fame. His passion for the game was matched only by his commitment to his career as a machinist at Bendix/Honeywell, where he served from 1967 until his retirement in 1999.
Beyond the walls of his workplace, Pete's heart was ever-present at Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church. Occasionally he served as greeter, where he was often the first smile that welcomed the congregation, embodying the church's spirit of community and fellowship. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding him through every challenge and triumph with grace.
Pete was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Yvonne Waters, in 1990 and his second wife, Amanda Martin, in 2015. He is survived by his daughters, Gayle (Marcus) Jones of Indianapolis, IN, and Stacey (Michael) Miller of Akron, OH; his stepson, Michael (Kristi) Smith of South Bend; and his cherished grandchildren, Kyndal and Grayson, who brought immense joy to his later years.
Pete was the beloved brother of Nathaniel Carothers, Shirley "Chuck" Carothers, and Al Carothers. He was preceded in death by his sister, Rose Wilson, and brother, William "Bill" Carothers. His brothers, along with a host of nieces, nephews and friends, will miss him dearly and will fondly remember Pete for his kindness, humor, and the love he had for his family.
A former avid golfer, Pete found solace and joy on the greens, where the simplicity of the game mirrored his approach to life: focus on the goal, take it one stroke at a time, and always follow through. His love for the sport was more than a hobby; it was a reflection of his philosophy that life, much like golf, is a game best played with patience and persistence.
Funeral services for Pete will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 5, 2024 at Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 101 N. Adams St, South Bend, IN. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the services at the church. In keeping with Pete's wishes cremation will take place following the services. Palmer Funeral Home – West Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Pete's honor to Center for Hospice Care, 501 Comfort Pl, Mishawaka, IN 46545.
