Obituary
"I fought the good fight, I have finished my course, and I have kept the faith."
2 Timothy 4:7
On Saturday, February 10, 2024, the God of wisdom reached into our midst and called our beloved Minister Barbara Ann Hambie to enteral rest in His Heavenly Kingdom.
Minister Barbara Ann Hambie was born on November 27, 1954, in the city of Portsmouth, Virginia to the late Marjorie Lee Ballard and Earnest Wilbert Flynn. Barbara was educated in the Norfolk Public School system and matriculated at Norfolk State University.
Barbara united in holy matrimony on August 14, 1983 with the lateVernon L. Hambie Sr. who is awaiting to welcome her to glory along with her mother, Marjorie L. Perkins; her father, Rev. Earnest Wilbert Flynn; grandmother, Rosebud Pickens; brothers Stephen Ballard and Wayne Flynn; and sister, Sharon High.
Barbara started her early career at Nations Bank (currently Bank of America). She was most recently employed by the Norfolk Public School System with more than 25 years of service as an Office Administrator. She loved the staff at William H. Ruffner Academy and they loved her. Barbara enjoyed interacting with the students and offering words of encouragement. She possessed a genuine desire to help each student reach their highest level of greatness. Her patient and empathetic demeanor created a safe environment for anyone to share their vulnerabilities and achievements. Barbara's love of children inspired and propelled her to author a children's book entitled Soaring On Gold Wings. Her passion to help anyone in need served her well during her many years as a part-time Telecommunication Operator at Walmart.
In 1965, at the youthful age of 12, Minister Barbara Hambie became a member of Westminster Baptist Church where she served in numerous capacities including, Sunday School Teacher, Choir Member, Bread Ministry, Senior Ministry, Usher Board and Administrator. Her work and vision helped to better each ministry in which she served, and her spirit will be forever woven into the fabric of Westminster Baptist Church.
In 1998, Minister Hambie was licensed to preach the gospel by Pastor Larry Wade. She later joined Bethany Baptist Church where she served on the Event Services Ministry alongside her sister, Angela Jernigan. Minister Hambie was a true woman of God. Her kind and tranquil spirit will be missed by her Bethany Church family.
