Barbara A. Matthews, 74, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 10th with her loving family by her side. Born in Trenton, she was a lifelong resident of the Bordentown Community.
Over the years, Barbara worked multiple jobs starting as a dispatcher for the New Jersey State Police and later for Bordentown City followed by administrative positions at Prince Sports Group, Inc., Breen Capital and ETS. Her last job was at the Quick Stop Food Store where she enjoyed working behind the deli counter and always greeted each customer with a big smile and a warm hello.
In 2010, Barbara started a homemade candy business called "An Occasional Favor." Nicknamed "The Candy Lady" by her craft fair regulars, Barbara created many delicious treats, the most popular being her signature "Buzz Blossoms."
Throughout her life, Barbara remained an active member of the community. In her early years, she was a volunteer with Hope Hose Humane Co. No. 1 and later with Consolidated Fire Company. After losing her mother to breast cancer in 1986, Barbara went on to spend many years as a volunteer with Susan G. Komen for the Cure of Central and South Jersey. She walked annually with her team "Miles for Memories" and organized a variety of fundraising events from ice cream socials to large scale ticket auctions. In March of 2011, Barbara proudly received the Susan G. Komen Promise of One Award in recognition of her efforts and dedication to the cause.
Barbara was an avid reader who also enjoyed bowling, crafting and watching true crime documentaries. A lifelong sports enthusiast, she was a devoted Phillies fan, loved her Washington Redskins and cherished the trips to Dover with her brother to watch the races. Barbara loved Rock-n-Roll and fast cars (especially her 1969 canary yellow Camaro with black racing stripes). Whether she was watching her granddaughter sing or seeing her favorite bands perform in Atlantic City (aka her "Happy Place") Barbara could be found smiling, dancing and singing along.
Barbara will be remembered for her big laugh, her generous heart and her unwavering strength. She was a loyal friend who was always there to help no matter what. But it was her role as "Mom" and "Mommom" where she shined the brightest. Barbara's greatest joy in life was her daughters and granddaughters, whom she cherished more than anything. She would never miss an opportunity to tell anyone listening how incredibly proud she was of her "girls". They were her world.
Daughter of the late Louis S. and Maryann (Sabat) Locacio, she is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Ruthann and Jason Perrine and Jennifer and David Dietrich, her former husband, Kermit S. "Matty" Matthews, her granddaughters, Emily Perrine and Juliet Perrine and her grand-dog, Otis, her sister and brother-in-law, Tess and Adrian George, her brother and sister-in-law, Louis S. Jr. and Peggy (Mushinski) Locacio, her niece, Stephanie George, and many friends.
