Barbara Jean (Summerfield) Terrill, 93, was born March 2, 1932 on her Granddaddy Jake's farm in Dryfork, WV. She was the first of four children born to the late Oscar C. Summerfield and Rachel Elizabeth (Davis) Summerfield. Her family moved to
Cumberland, MD in 1943.
She was happily married to the late Sherman F. "Steve" Terrill. Also preceding her in death was her sister Gwyndolyn Smith Aman; her brother Glavis Paul Summerfield; a niece Brenda Lee Smith; a nephew, Ronald Smith; best friend, Marylou (Markovitz) Scott of Clanton, Alabama who Aunt Barb referred to as "my sister who is not my sister"; and her cherished feline companion LaLa.
Barb graduated from Fort Hill High School in 1950 where she was valedictorian of her class and a member of the National Honor Society. She attended Catherman's Business School and Allegany Community College.
As a teenager and in her 20's she worked on Stegmaier's Farm and Orchards. In January of 1951 she began training as a Laboratory Technician at Memorial Hospital under the guidance of the late Dr. Benedict Skitarelic. The Lab was then drawing its own blood donors and she fondly recalls drawing blood from Dr. Fuller B. Whitworth which was cross matched and given to one of his patients. Barbara worked all laboratory disciplines for 3 years and then chose to fill a vacancy in the histology dept where she worked for several years. She then worked 40+ years in the pathology dept where she transcribed pathology reports for many different pathologists. She was a member of the National Registry of Medical Secretaries. Barbara retired from Memorial Hospital in 1997 after 46+ years, a record that is still unbroken.
Barb had many hobbies, she wrote poetry, loved to read, did embroidery, was an avid nature lover who loved birds, flowers and butterflies and was fascinated by owls, and always happy when she spotted a rainbow. She was a member of the USAF Ground Observers Corps during the Korean conflict.
Barb loved life and people, and attended Lighthouse of Hope Church. She was repeatedly heard saying "If I can make life better for one then I will not have lived in vain".
Barbara is survived, her precious stepdaughter, Maria Lynn (May) Wilkerson and husband Kenny of Magnolia, Arkansas; three step-grandchildren, Jeffrey, Jeremy, and Jennifer whom she dearly loved. Aunt Barb who had no children of her own loved all of her nieces and nephews as her own; her very special nephew, Edward W. "Hacker" Smith she helped raise and lovingly referred to as her kid, his wife Amanda Smith was a caregiver for Aunt Barb's mother "Granny" for over 4 years; his daughter Brittney Leigh was her rainbow on a cloudy day. Brittney's sons, Lanndyn, Lyrix, and Lawson gave her much joy; and their daddy Mat Ritchey made their family complete.
