Ben Byron Long Jr.
April 29, 1957 - September 21, 2025
Ben Byron Long Jr., age 68, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 21, 2025, at home surrounded by his cherished loved ones. He was born on April 29, 1957, in Alma, Michigan, to the late Ben B. Long Sr. and Helen (Karowicz). Ben grew up in Alma and made his mark both on and off the football field, where he was a standout defensive lineman at Alma High School and Alma College. After graduation, he went on to have a long and successful career at General Motors, where he worked in management and supervision before retiring. Earlier in his career, he also spent time working for MITSUBA.
Ben had a big heart. He loved deeply and lived with quiet strength. He married the love of his life, Leilani "Loni" Burns, on March 25, 2023, and from that moment on they were inseparable. They were true best friends and partners in everything, from their shared love of breakfast dates to exploring new restaurants, especially any with spicy Mexican food. Ben also had a gift for woodworking. He had a love for the Dallas Cowboys and enjoyed watching them play. One of the most surprising joys of Ben's life came after a trip to Florida, where he discovered a deep fondness for manatees-gentle giants he couldn't wait to see again.
Ben loved his family deeply and always found ways to show it through laughter, little gifts, and tender acts of care. He is survived by his beloved wife, Loni; his daughter, Natalie Long (Zach Feit); stepchildren, Sarah Tate, Justin (Janel) Green, and Zach Maida; and his grandchildren, Skylar, Stella, AJ, Kai, Khloe, and Kip Jr., each the light of his life.
Per his wishes, Ben will be cremated, and a celebration of his life will be held in the near future. Those wishing to honor Ben's memory may follow the family's wishes to help cover funeral expenses, either through the family or by making a contribution directly to the funeral home. In honor of Ben, hug your loved ones tight, laugh a little louder, and never pass up an opportunity to enjoy a breakfast with someone you love.
