Ben Armstrong, beloved husband, brother, father, father-in-law, and Pa began life on March 22, 1945, in Holmes County, FL. Born to Walter and Estelle Armstrong, he grew up in Highland View, Florida and graduated from Port St. Joe High School.
On June 2, 2022, he passed from this life into eternity with Christ. He leaves behind his wife of nearly 55 years, Helen Armstrong; son Allen Armstrong (Gina); daughter Brandi Tindel (Rob); and three granddaughters Emily Armstrong, Elise Armstrong, and Mallory Tindel; two sisters Betty Sue Hanlon (Gene) and Sarah Byrd (Gerald); and multiple nieces, nephews, and "family" he chose but wasn't born with. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Clarence and Ricky and sisters Jeanette and Melba Peak (Earl).
He loved his God and family above everything else, but his third love was most definitely University of Alabama football. He proudly served in the US Army during the Vietnam War, was awarded with a Bronze Star during his time in theater and was discharged in 1969. He married his wife in 1967 and they began their life together in Port St. Joe, FL. In 1976 he moved his family to Wewahitchka, FL and then to Panama City in 1987. The moves in his life were in support of new opportunities with St. Joe Telephone and Telegraph Company with whom he worked for over 40 years until his retirement.
Anyone who knew him, knew that ministry was his strongest passion and was the single achievement, though he had many, of which he was most proud. He served as a youth leader at West Side Baptist Church and Glad Tidings Assembly of God in Wewahitchka and staff pastor at Callaway Assembly of God, Eastside Assembly of God, and Bear Creek Assembly of God in Panama City. He loved the role of fill-in Pastor when needed and has preached hundreds of sermons all over this district in his lifetime. He loved his God and his family with every ounce of his soul and had an endearing gift to share love with all he met. His laugh was infectious. He was the king of "punny" jokes and loved a funny story. Humor was a communication mechanism for him. He had a genuine love for people, and it is evidenced by the lives that have been impacted by his. He never met a stranger and had a gift for making anyone feel welcome and accepted as part of his family. He will be missed by many, but Heaven has welcomed home one who fought the good fight, ran the race, kept the faith, and finished strong.
His wife Helen was his "beautiful distraction" and all he had, and all that he was, centered around her. He was the best father that any two kids could have ever asked for. Allen and Brandi never had to guess if their dad loved them or was proud of them because he told them both every time, he spoke to them. His grandkids brought him much joy. He enjoyed spending time with them all, supporting them at every event, giving them everything they were not supposed to have, and being the person that they could always turn to. He always had time for a life lesson or a hug and a prayer and never let a visit go by without letting us all know how much he loved us. He will always be remembered, he will always be loved and adored, and he will always be our hero. Roll Tide.
A visitation will take place on Sunday, June 5, 2022, from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 6, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at Bear Creek Assembly of God, with Pastors Tony Teas and Tommy Moore officiating. Interment at Holly Hills Cemetery in Port St. Joe will take place at 3:00 p.m., CST (4:00 p.m. EST). Pallbearers are Dennis Peak, Danny Peak, Ken Peak, Greg Byrd, Stacey Hanlon, Josh Bateman, Michael Mize, and Jason Lowrey.
