Billie Lee Waddell, age 99, passed away peacefully on August 4, 2025, in Shepherdsville, Kentucky. Born on April 12, 1926, in Louisville to Fred and Mary Kurtz, Billie lived a full and beautiful life defined by kindness, simplicity, and love.
Billie had a deep appreciation for the outdoors. No matter the season—or the temperature—you could find her tending to her garden, lovingly caring for her flowers under the summer sun. She found joy and peace in the simple things: the scent of blooming petals, the quiet presence of birds at the feeder, and the soft company of the cats she adored.
A true friend to animals, Billie never turned away a stray. Her heart was big enough for every cat in the neighborhood, and she made sure none of them ever went hungry. Her yard was often a sanctuary, filled with birdsong, blossoms, and a few curious whiskers peeking around the corner.
When she wasn't in her garden or caring for her animals, Billie could be found treasure-hunting at local yard sales or browsing the aisles of her favorite thrift stores. She had a knack for finding joy in unexpected places.
Billie was also a proud supporter of the Louisville Cardinals, cheering them on with enthusiasm. But above all else, her favorite moments were the holidays—especially Thanksgiving and Christmas—surrounded by her family and friends, laughing, sharing stories, and simply being together. Her family was her greatest joy, and she cherished every moment with her children and grandchildren.
Billie is preceded in death by her loving husband of 59 years, Jack Waddell; her parents, Fred C. Kurtz and Mary Magee Kurtz; 2 sisters, Rose Lewellen and Dottie Bose; Daughter-in-Law; Barbara Waddell; and cousin, Jean Payne.
Left to cherish her memory, Billie is survived by her son, Duane Waddell (Judy); grandchildren; Kyle Waddell (Michelle), Trevor Waddell, and Tucker Waddell (Alyssa); loving friends, Tabitha, Terri, and Tom O’Neal; and a host of extended family and close friends.
Billie’s spirit was warm, giving, and full of life. She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and memories that will be treasured by all who knew her.
She will be deeply missed by her family, her friends, and the many lives she touched—human and feline alike.
