Boyd "Mitch" Wingate Mitchell, Jr., 73, of Greensboro passed away Tuesday, April 15, at Wesley Long Hospital in Greensboro. He was born in Greensboro to Boyd W. and Betty Burgess Mitchell. He graduated from Northeast Guilford High School and served in the U.S. Army. He was a proud Vietnam Veteran. He returned home and attended The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Mitch spent 44 years in the trucking and transportation industry. After many years on and over the road, he moved into research and development, working for Volvo North America as a test driver, DOT Compliance Officer and Driver Manager.
He was an avid and skilled fisherman, enjoying the sport from Smith Mountain Lake to the coastal waters of Florida. Mitch was also a Life Member of the National Rifle Association of America and a true car enthusiast.
Mr. Mitchell was preceded in death by his parents, Boyd W. Sr. and Betty Burgess Mitchell, sister Karen M. Laughter, and brother Keith F. Mitchell.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Kathy Jo Snyder Mitchell of Greensboro; son, Clayton W. Mitchell of Albemarle, N.C.; sister Chryl (Mike) Twilley of Lexington, N.C.; and sister-in-law, Judy W. Snyder of State Road, NC. He was "Uncle Mitch" to nephews Todd M. Twilley, of Lexington, N.C., Dr. Jonathan Snyder (Courtney) of Elkin and Matthew Snyder (Margaret) of Charlotte.
A private service of celebration will be held at a later date. The family suggest that any memorials be made to the charity of their choice or Samaritan's Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607.
