Martinsville native, Brian Kelley Brummett, passed from his earthly life with loving family by his side at 5:05 PM on Wednesday, February 26th, 2025, at the IU Health Methodist Hospital. His untimely death came only two days after his 67th birthday, which was celebrated with love in the hospital.
He had courageously battled failing health for many years, though he always remained positive and cheerful. Brian's life began on Monday, February 24th, 1958, in Martinsville, Indiana. He was the one of two children born to the late Bobby Lee and Barbara Louise (Sichting) Brummett.
The Martinsville High School graduate was a member of the class of 1976. As a high schooler, Brian was actively involved in athletics, held several school records and was awarded the John R. Wooden Athletic Award. After graduation he attended Franklin University, which is when he met the love of his life, Holly Beth (Koons) Brummett, whom he married at the Brooklyn Christian Church on December 19th, 1981.
In 1987 Brian began working for Paul E. Smith Plumbing Company in Indianapolis, where he dedicated 20+ years of his life. After leaving the plumbing company, Brian gained employment with the MSD of Martinsville working as a custodian at Bell Intermediate Academy. He thoroughly enjoyed working at the school, mostly because he could interact with the students. Over the course of his eleven years as custodian, Brian not only did his job as custodian, but he also greeted the kids as they arrived at school daily with hugs, smiles, high-fives and fist-bumps.
Outside of work, Brian was an extraordinary husband, dad and papaw. He coached his daughter's softball teams, gymnastics, and cheer teams, as well as his grandson and nephew's baseball teams. From 1998-2007, he and Holly co-coached MHS Cheerleading and Gymnastics and in 2008, they established the first Martinsville competitive cheer team, Sting All Star Cheer. He was also an avid Cincinnati Reds, Indianapolis Colts and Indianapolis Pacers fan. When it came to college sports, Brian loved and fervently cheered for all Indiana collegiate teams. Though he was a sports fanatic and exceptional coach, Brian's true passion was his family. He was a loyal and dedicated husband, dad and papaw, never missing any of his girl's extracurricular activities, or calls for a shoulder to cry on or a tire to repair, regardless of the distance between them. He spent every waking moment outside of work over the past several years on ball fields, racetracks or gymnasiums cheering on his grandchildren.
Brian's legacy of love and dedication to his family will forever be remembered and cherished by his family and friends including his wife of nearly 44 years, Holly Beth Brummett of Martinsville; two daughters, Heidi (husband, Justin) DeMott of Martinsville and Kelli (husband, Derrick) Powell of Evansville; sister, Tina (husband, Dewayne) Dunning of Martinsville; and his five beloved grandchildren, Ryder, Lakelyn and Willow DeMott, and Deacon and Opal Powell.
Family and friends are invited to visit on Tuesday, March 4th, 2025, from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM and on Wednesday, March 5th from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM at Neal & Summers Funeral Home. Rev. Keenan Steinway will conduct a service celebrating Brian's life on Wednesday, March 5th, 2025, beginning at 11:00 AM at the funeral home and he will be laid to rest in Nebo Memorial Park following the funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, the family is accepting donations to assist with medical and funeral expenses. Please make checks payable to Holly Brummett and mail to Neal & Summers, 110 E. Poston Road, Martinsville, Indiana, 46151.
