Rev. Dr. C. Lee Filker, known affectionately to friends and family as Lee, departed this life on January 7, 2024, at his residence in
Mason, Michigan, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering faith, love, and service. Born on October 18, 1935, in
Elyria, Ohio, to the late Charles Henry and Josephine (Krugman) Filker, Lee would embark on a journey of spiritual and educational growth that would shape a vibrant life of leadership and community involvement.
Lee's scholastic journey began with his graduation from Mentor High School in 1953, which set the foundation for a lifetime of learning and faith-based service. His dedication to education was evident as he pursued and achieved a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry from Sterling College, followed by a Master's Degree in Divinity from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. Ever the scholar, Lee furthered his education with a Master's Degree in Education from Kent State University and culminated his academic accomplishments with a Doctorate of Ministry from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.
In his professional life, Lee answered a higher calling, serving as Pastor of multiple churches in Ohio, including communities in Mahoning and St. Clairsville. He continued his pastoral care in Michigan within the cities of Grand Rapids (Kentwood), and Lansing at Mt. Hope Presbyterian, Peoples Church in East Lansing, Dimondale Presbyterian, and Delta Presbyterian. His commitment to spiritual guidance extended beyond the church walls as he served as the on-call chaplain for St. Lawrence Hospital and dedicated 15 years as chaplain for the Ingham County Sheriff Department.
Married to his beloved wife, Patricia Ann Filker, on July 7, 1979, Lee celebrated 44 and a half years of wedded bliss, having met Patricia at church in Grand Rapids and later connecting in Lansing. Together, they raised a combined family that included their children: Joel (Vicki) Filker, Kathy Hersman, Robert Slep, and the late Norman Slep; a sister, Peggy Church; and a host of grandchildren who were the apples of his eye: Kristen (Anthony) Browning, Jaclyn (Don) Hays, David (Melanie) Slep, Jakob (Jessica) Slep, Harlee Slep, Dalton Slep, Breanne Filker, Brittnay (Alan) Neuens, and Jeremiah (Natalie) Filker. He mourned the loss of his grandson, Jesse Filker, who precedes him in passing.
A man of diverse interests, Lee was an avid gardener who cherished his time amid the vegetables in his garden. His dexterity for landscaping and woodworking reflected his deep appreciation for nature and craftsmanship. Known for his sociable and engaging personality, he could often be found sailing his Seasnark sporting a "Kool" sail, a reflection of his resourcefulness and sense of humor as he purchased the sail with Kool cigarette empty packs from his friends who smoked (he was not a smoker but wasn't afraid to ask to ask for empty packs). His love for golfing, whether in the sunny climate of Florida or the picturesque courses of Michigan, was matched only by the joy he found in camping with his family along Lake Michigan's shores.
A voracious reader and conversationalist, Lee never missed an opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue. His commitment to community was exemplified through his involvement with the Dimondale Lion's Club, and he played an active role in the Presbytery of Lake Michigan. Yet, above all, it was his family and his church that remained the cornerstones of his existence.
Those who knew Rev. Dr. C. Lee Filker would describe him as loving, faith-filled, and passionate. His presence was a beacon of warmth and wisdom, and his impact on the lives he touched will forever be cherished. As we bid farewell to a remarkable man, we celebrate the ways in which he has enriched our lives through his example of love, dedication, and service. Lee's memory will continue to guide those who had the privilege of knowing him as we carry forward the lessons of compassion and integrity he so gracefully imparted.
