Carl Thomas, Jr. ( 90) passed away peacefully on May 15, 2024 at Baptist Hospital East.
He was born on December 2, 1933, the firstborn of his parents Ruby Catherine Thompson and Carl Thomas, Sr.
He was predeceased by his parents, and his younger brother, Kenneth Lee Thomas.
Carl joined the Navy in 1953 and was a paint specialist, making several trips to Japan courtesy of this branch of our armed forces. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Louisville and owned a successful interior design company. Carl retired from Jefferson County Public Schools after a distinguished career as an art teacher and art program director. He taught at several high schools, developed arts programs for special schools, and taught art at Ormsby Village Treatment Center.
He loved traveling the world and had a special fondness for Oriental and Indian art and culture. He enjoyed shopping at antique stores and markets both local & worldwide. He could tell you the story behind all of his belongings. He has a number of friends that he has kept in touch with across the years as a result of his various interests and pursuits. Carl was a person with advanced intuition. He often served as our family pastor and counselor and was a great resource for stories and family history.
He is survived by his nephews and niece; Gregg Thomas, Janet Thomas, and Scott Thomas ( Shannon), his first cousin of the same age, Betty Rae Perciful Nichols, his beloved cat ( Angel), his primary caregivers; including Patsy Heitzman, and his local cousins on his mother's side; Mark Skaggs (Jan), Glenn Skaggs (Barbara Hancock), Lee Dame, Lisa Dame Smith (Dan Bennett) and Curt Dame ( Debbie Haddad).
His family & friends would like to extend their gratitude to his neighbors, the staff of Caretenders, Twinbrook Assisted Living, 6N and ICU at Baptist Hospital East and many others for their compassionate care of Carl during these last months.
Visitation will be at Highlands Funeral Home (Taylorsville Rd. & Dutchmans Ln) from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm on Friday, May 31. His funeral service will be at 11:00 am on June 1 at Highlands Funeral Home with interment at Evergreen Cemetery to follow.
Carl has "Gone Home" and we will miss his conversations, his wit, and his ability to "tell it like it is "
