Carmen Spann was born in Washington D.C. to the late Jakki Worthy. She came to Wellsville at 15 months of age. She attended Wellsville and D.C. Public Schools. Carmen was baptized in Mt. Gilead Baptist Church in D.C in June of 1958.
She joined First Baptist under the leadership of Rev. W.B. Carswell and served as Sunday School teacher for over 20 years, sang in the Baby Choir, Junior Choir, No.2 Choir, the Angelics, and the Senior Choir. She was the bulletin clerk under Rev. Maiden and Rev. Hunter for 13 years and served as church clerk under Rev. Maiden. She was the pastor's secretary for 9 years under Rev. Hunter, also served as a calendar clerk, vice president of the United Women, co-chairlady of the Women's Dept., worked in Love Fund as the secretary, and was co-director of Junior Bible Class. She also sang in the Golden Bells and The Majors & Minors. She also worked in the B.T.U., and was founder and the only president of the Angelics.
Married to the late Clarence Spann, they had 2 children, the late Scott and April Smothers. They also had 3 grandchildren.
Carmen had many likes and dislikes, and here are a few just to list them:
Her favorite food was nuts, her favorite color was red, her favorite hobbies were gardening and sewing, her dream vacation was in Paris, her favorite movie was Gone with The Wind, and if she could dine with anyone in the world, it would have been The Lakers. If you looked in her refrigerator, three things you were guaranteed to find were orange juice, eggs, and butter. Her biggest pet peeve was phonies and fakes.
Carmen was not your typical gardener or grandmother. She was a person on the upbeat, and had a bubbly personality and was fun to be around. A born leader with an independence of creativity, she was a perfectionist at heart and expected the same from others. She was a good Bible Scholar. She never forgot a face, and if she claimed you as a friend, you had a lasting jewel. One thing she could not do is mask her real feelings, it showed in her eyes.
Carmen was a classic to the bone. You would never catch her with pointed hats or polk-a-dots. She had a unique loyalty to her family and small circle of friends.
Carmen's arrangements have been entrusted to the MacLean Chapel of CARE Funeral & Cremation Specialists in Wellsville.
