Carol Opal Matthews, 81, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away, Wednesday, September 3, 2025. Carol was born on March 19, 1944, and was the daughter of Edmund and Opal (Wilson) Zeiler. A 1962 graduate of Bedford High School, she then married Nate J. Matthews on April 19, 1968, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Temperance, Michigan. He preceded her in death on January 18, 2018. He and Carol traveled the world as a military family. Carol managed the deli at the former family business, Zeiler's Farm Market in Temperance for over 20 years. She enjoyed cooking and entertaining, but will be remembered for the love of her family. Carol was an active member of St. Clement Catholic Church, where she was involved in funeral luncheon, and charity events.
She is survived by her loving children, Connie (Brad) Matthews - Reynolds, Todd (Molly) Matthews, and Carey (Jim Merli) Matthews; sister, Sharon (Tom) Beres; brothers, Robert (Sharon) Zeiler, and Jack (Judy) Zeiler; grandchildren, Andrea, Kaci, Norwyn, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family. Carol was preceded in death by her sister, Margaret Holmes; brothers, Roscoe, Paul, Richard, and Michael Zeiler.
Visitation will be from 3-8 pm, Thursday, September 11, 2025, at the Michael W. Pawlak Funeral Home, 1640 Smith Rd. (at Jackman) Temperance, Michigan. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am, Friday, September 12, 2025, at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 4555 N Haven Ave, Toledo, OH 43612, where she will lie in state after 9:30 am. Interment will follow at Toledo Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Heart Association or Dementia Society of America. www.pawlakfuneralhome.com
