Beloved wife, mother, and Nanny, Catherine Doherty, 86, was called home to the Lord on March 16, 2024, at home in Loveland, CO, under hospice care and surrounded by her family. Catherine was born December 30, 1937, in Brooklyn, NY, the seventh daughter to Thomas and Julie (Cooney) Kimple and grew up in the Flatlands area of Brooklyn. She attended Catherine McAuley High School, graduating in 1955, and found employment with a shipping company in lower Manhattan.
Through mutual friends, Catherine met Jim Doherty in 1955, and they were married September 7, 1957, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Brooklyn. The foundation of their 61-year union was abundant love, laughter, motorhome adventures, friendships, and especially family, including seven children and 18 grandchildren. Through their actions and words, together they truly epitomized the value of hard work, determination, commitment, respect, and humor for their family and everyone who knew them.
Catherine and Jim were called from Brooklyn to the West when, during a motorhome trip through Loveland in August 1971, they were hooked by the sight of the mountains over Boyd Lake. With little hesitation, they bought a house on the lake, returned to Brooklyn, packed up their life, and moved their family to the open spaces of Boyd Lake Shores for good on August 28, 1971. Catherine raised their brood as Jim and Wilbourne McCollough established McCullough & Doherty Construction Company, building quality, custom homes primarily in the Boyd Lake Shores neighborhood. Lifelong entrepreneurs, Jim and Catherine went on to own and operate 34 Liquor in Loveland from 1980 to 1991 and invest in real estate before retiring and spending half-time in Naples, FL.
Throughout her life, Catherine enjoyed painting, reading, doing crossword puzzles, and spending time drinking chardonnay with family and friends. Catherine is survived by her children, Cathi Doherty (Rick Herman) of Frederick, Jim Doherty Jr. (Kelly) of Loveland, Pat Doherty (Candy) of Loveland, Mary McQuade (Paul) of Loveland, Tom Doherty of Lakewood, and Liz Simon (Bernie) of Loveland; 18 loving grandchildren; her sister, Helen Lawson; numerous nieces and nephews; and abundant Boyd Lake Shores, Loveland, and Naples friends. Catherine was reunited in heaven with her husband Jim, son Matthew, grandson Kale Simon, parents, five sisters, brother, and friends too numerous to mention.
Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, March 22, 2024, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Loveland with a Mass of Christian Burial following at 2:00 p.m. Cremation will follow the services. A private family inurnment will be held at Loveland Burial Park.
