Catherine Mezzo Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Paul Ippolito Summit Memorial on Feb. 26, 2026.
Catherine S. Mezzo age 83, of New Providence, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, February 26, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on August 28, 1942, in Newark, New Jersey, Catherine Skibinsky was the daughter of Catherine and Anthony Skibinsky. She grew up in Newark and graduated Valedictorian of St Peter's Academy. She later lived in Union, New Jersey, where she and her husband Arthur raised their family for many years before moving to New Providence in 1985.

Catherine then went on to earn her degree from Saint Peter's University and build a successful career as Comptroller at Ballotta Napurano, where she worked until her retirement.

Catherine is a woman of God and has dedicated her life to walking with Jesus. Her empathy, strength, determination, and compassion has touched the lives of so many. Teaching CCD at St Michael's in Union for 16 years and serving God by serving others.

She had a lifelong love of sports, enjoying tennis, volleyball, and softball. She was instrumental in founding Union's first girls' softball league, the Union Suffragettes, which has proudly taught the sport to young women for over 50 years. Her dedication to athletics extended to numerous tennis accomplishments and active involvement in the local sports community.

A passionate advocate for women's rights, Catherine fought tirelessly for equal pay and greater opportunities for women. Her commitment to justice and fairness left a lasting impact on her community.

Catherine could read a book a day, she was a longtime member of a local book club in Summit where she developed beautiful friendships and found joy in lifelong learning and fellowship. Her grandchildren looked forward to a good debate or lecture on a moments notice which she welcomed with passion.

Catherine selflessly cared for elderly family members in their time of need, always putting others before herself. She is the definition of unconditional love. Above all, she was devoted to her cherished family. Her grandchildren were the light of her life, and she treasured every moment spent with them. She instilled in her family and friends a guiding belief:

"Serving others doesn't take something from you, it does something to you."

She is survived by her beloved husband of 64 years, Arthur Mezzo; her loving children, Catherine Wolfram and Arthur Mezzo, Jr.; her brother, Anthony Skibinsky; her cherished grandchildren, Arthur Mezzo III, Sarah Wolfram, James Mezzo, Cole Wolfram, Michael Mezzo, and Jake Wolfram; and her precious great-grandson, Callum.

She was predeceased by her parents and her sisters, Maryann Skibinsky and Claire Hardina.

Family and friends are warmly invited to attend Catherine's "Celebration of Life Service" on Saturday, February 28th at 10:00AM at Trinity Episcopal Church, 119 Forest Avenue, Cranford, NJ. A luncheon will follow the service. A private burial will be held on Monday for immediate family members.

In lieu of flowers, kindly consider a donation in honor of Catherine to Covenant House, an organization dear to her heart that supports young people facing homelessness with compassion and unconditional love.
