Spring Lake Heights bid farewell to one of its most distinguished residents on February 14th, 2024, as Cathy Mitchell Krein, a revered broadcaster and journalism professor, passed away. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend, Cathy's legacy will endure through the countless lives she touched.
Born in the Sunnyside neighborhood of Queens, NYC, Cathy was the youngest of four siblings. Her parents, Timothy (Teddy) and Catherine (Kate Lavery) Mitchell, instilled in her a passion for education and a commitment to excellence.Survived by her daughter Karyn Lockshine, Son- in law Dennis Lockshine and grandchildren, RJ and Owen Lockshine she leaves behind a rich tapestry of memories.
Cathy's academic journey took her through St. Theresa Grammar School, Bishop McDonnell High School, Fordham University (Bachelors in Management), Queens College (Masters in Media Analysis), NYU (Film), and Hunter College (various courses in government, education, political theory, and film). She was, indeed, an educator in every sense of the word.
Her illustrious 23-year career at CBS News, beginning as an Assistant and Writer for Walter Cronkite, stands as a testament to her journalistic prowess. From the historic moon landing to political primaries, elections, and presidential inaugurals, Cathy covered it all. Her roles as Editorial Director, Producer, Writer, Political Director, and Editorial Director showcased her versatility and dedication to the craft.
Post her CBS News tenure, Cathy continued to make significant contributions. From serving as Communications Chief for Brooklyn DA Elizabeth Holtzman to being the Vice President for External Affairs at Molloy College on Long Island, her impact was far-reaching. Her role as Associate Professor of Journalism & Mass Media Studies and Coordinator of the Broadcast Journalism Program at Hofstra University and later as an Adjunct Professor at Monmouth University marked her commitment to shaping the next generation of journalists.
A prolific author, Cathy co-authored "Campaign 1976" and contributed to various CBS News Handbooks, leaving an indelible mark on political literature. Her extensive biography listings in prominent publications such as Who's Who, Who's Who of American Women, and The Golden Edition of Who's Who in America reflect her influential presence.
Cathy's commitment to her profession extended beyond her individual achievements. As a Shop Steward for the Writers Guild of America and a Board member of The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS), she played a pivotal role in shaping the industry.
Her numerous honors, including the Admissions Marketing Awards, the CBS News Professor-in-Residence, and The RTNDA Educator in the Newsroom Fellowship, underscore her impact on education and journalism. Cathy's dedication to excellence and tireless efforts as a journalist, educator, and advocate for the industry have left an enduring legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come.
In the words of those who knew her best, Cathy Mitchell Krein will be remembered not just for her professional achievements, but for the kindness, warmth, and wisdom she shared with all who had the privilege of crossing paths with her. In celebrating her life, we honor a trailblazer, a mentor, and a cherished friend. May she rest in peace, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to shine brightly in the hearts and minds of those who were fortunate enough to know her.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her visitation on Sunday afternoon from 1pm - 5pm at the Perinchief Chapels, 438 High St., Mount Holly. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated on Monday at 10:30am at Sacred Heart Church, 260 High St., Mount Holly. Burial in Calvary Cemetery, Long Island, NY will be held privately.
